Cataloguing games and compilations - opinions wanted.

Postby Sut » January 8th, 2016, 4:01 pm

I've started cataloguing my games with this pretty nifty app: Video Games Database - Barcode Scanner for My Game Manager Database Collection (Wii U, Xbox One, PS4) by Runner Apps
https://appsto.re/gb/c_kAC.i

I wanted some feedback / opinions.
I have quite a few retro game compilations especially on PS2. The good thing with this app is that I can log my progress in games down. So it not only catalogues my games but it manages what I've completed, what I haven't beaten yet, what I've played, last time I played, etc.

So I cannot decide to include games from compilations in the app. For example Phantasy Star 2 and Yars Revenge I've spent a lot of time with these games but through a compilation. I feel I want to log these down as I do own them albeit not individually and I've sunk a lot of time into them. But I also recognise that some may not think these form part of your collection.

If you are of the opinion of including them would you log them under the host system or the system it was released/based on ? For example Yars Revenge would I catalogue it under PS2 as that's the actual system I play it on or under Atari 2600 ?

I keep changing my mind with this, but I want all my games on this app for both catalogue purposes and a play tracker. Opinions ?

That's a good question- so basically you want to know if games inside of a compilation should be tracked on that compilation or on the original game (which you may not own). Personally, if I owned the game individually I'd post it on there since it would be easier to track. If I didn't own the game any other way I'd probably put it on the compilation disc since I'd want the catalog more for games I own, instead of tracking my status in games.

Yeah it would skew my collection if I posted all 80 odd Atari games from the Atari Anthology as part of my collection. But by the same token I spent a whole lot of time on the arcade games and Yars Revenge.
Perhaps I might be better tracking the games within the compilation entry.
