The ugly truth of Japan being a censorship free paradise!

Postby Sonicx9 » January 28th, 2016, 9:31 pm

Because many do not no that Japan is worse then both Germany/Australia on both harsh age ratings/censorship. Here is a small list of examples below:

Why are some games rated differently, or even censored, depending on their region? An example of this would be Grand Theft Auto 5, which was censored in Japan due to high impact sex and nudity, along with the game's controversial torture section. Resident Evil 4 and 6 were also censored in Japan by removing decapitations, lowering the age requirements to a CERO D rating (equivalent to an M rating) and not the extreme Z rating. Was this to prevent lower sales for the series in Japan?

Sometimes games are given harsher age ratings in cultures where you wouldn't think of that to be the case. For example, in the U.S., sexuality and skimpy outfits are viewed as more taboo compared to Japan. However, there have been a few examples of these sexualized games/games with sexualized characters in games being rated harsher in Japan compared to US. One of the more unusual cases was the first Senran Kagura game getting an ESRB T rating in the USA, while other countries mostly got M-rated equivalent ratings across the globe. The game was exactly the same, minus the ages of the characters. Even the 2012 XBLA/PSN re-release of Fighting Vipers received a CERO C rating in Japan for Sexual content, despite the US versions of the game being rated E10+, completely uncut/uncensored.

I have more to share but this is just a small list examples of Japan not being a censorship free paradise!

This is a special thanks to DanDan on Censored Gaming on YouTube

Best of luck with your thread. Please try and remember you don't need a ton of links and walls of texts to make your writing work.
