So I pop in my Spectre Blu Ray into my PS3 and it says "You must update your encryption key to play this Blu Ray. Perform a system update to update your encryption key."
Wait WHAT? I was able to play it with no problem on my old Toshiba Blu Ray player.
I thought the whole point of having a disc is that you own the media and don't need the "okay" from a remote server to get permission. Apparently I was wrong. What a crock.
Is it just Sony players that do this??

I don't know VGC. But I heard Spectre was very good!

It's DRM, not the formats fault...

DRM on a blu-ray release? For what, to keep me from playing it on different PS3's?

Re: Blu Ray Sucks
As someone pointed out, it's the DRM - not the Blu Ray format.
Still, it seems the format enables stuff like DRM, which we never saw on DVDs.
So now I'm wondering - can I now play my Blu Rays without an Internet connection???
Will these discs be useless in the future? If so, it defeats the entire purpose of owning the physical media.
And the worst part is, we don't even KNOW the details of the DRM on a particular Blu Ray.
If there are strings attached, they should be spelled out on a little card in the case, or at least somewhere online.
But that's the real insidious part - we're all in the dark. I couldn't find any definitive information online (partly because there are multiple DRM techniques).
I suspect the industry doesn't want you to know the details, because you might not buy the movie if you did.
Of course, it's the exact same way with video games. People assume this and that, but nobody knows for sure exactly what the rules are.
If someone can enlighten me on this subject I'd appreciate it!

Re: Blu Ray Sucks
I think this might be more a PS3 problem than blu ray one. Best bet is always use a player that isn't online capable. It wont have any of the new DRM features but the disc still pretty much has to play to avoid breaking the spec.
Was you PS3 connected to the net at the time? Or did your offline PS3 ask to be connected to the net in order to pay the disc?

Re: Blu Ray Sucks
It was offline and I have no plans to put it online just for this.
I have a nice remote control for that system which is why I wanted to use it.
Maybe it's because the Blu Ray was new?
Don't recall seeing this before.
