Whatever Zelda you choose, you may consult zeldadungeon.net for help. No shame in consulting guides, maps, tips: that's as authentically old school as it gets.
I truly recommend starting with the original.
I have never played A Legend Of Zelda Game.

Half of me wants to suplex you for not playing one of the most important series in video game history. The other half of me wants to high five you for not playing one of the most overrated series in video game history.
All half-kidding aside, the old 2D games are much better games than anything post-1995, and more accessible to a newcomer. While my personal favorite is Link's Awakening for Game Boy, I agree with the Critic and a few others here: Link to the Past for SNES is the place to start. If you enjoy it then explore the rest of the series; but if you don't like that game then you know Zelda is definitely not for you. While the original NES game is good, you might as well start with the best if you're planning to play just one before deciding if you like the series enough to play more.

I think the best start is Zelda A Link Between Worlds, because it is much easier (and shorter) than A Link to the Past. If you're new to Zelda, I'd always advise to start with one of the 2D games. But also Phantom Hourglass (DS) and the Game Boy games (Link's Awakening, Oracle of Ages/Seasons) are good starting points. I find the 3D games a little bit harder to get into.
