The Video Game Critic

I'm talking about games that are so fun you'll play them for hours upon hours upon hours without feeling the least bit bored.

For me, these are arcade style games. Here's some of my candidates

Crazy Taxi (Dreamcast)
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (Genesis)
Star Fox 64 (N64)
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2
Puyo Puyo/Dr Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine (Genesis)
NBA Jam (Wii)
NFL Blitz (Imagine if Roger Goodell was commissioner back in 1997. Hard hitting plays would be fined in the actual game.)
Wayne Gretzky's 3D Hockey (N64)
Geometry Wars Galaxies (Wii)

Plenty more, but these are the ones I instantly think of. How about yours, forum?

Crash Team Racing for the original Playstation systems
Mario Kart 64 for the Nintendo 64 systems
The Donkey Kong bonus game in Donkey Kong 64 for the Nintendo 64 systems
Tetris for the original Game Boy systems

I enjoyed playing the first two games for the fun of racing against their own players and the last two games for their challenges of having the highest personal levels and scores possible.

Most fun? Maybe not. Most addicting? Civilization without a doubt.

Whether it is Civ 1 or all the way through 5, if I start one of these games I'll be lucky if I don't lose my entire day. Just....one...more...turn.............

The sole reason why I'm not doing better in life is MLB: The Show. I was almost over it before some jerk made the 1989 rosters. Hey, can I help it if Andre Dawson is my favorite player of all time?

Three immediately come to mind:

3. Goldeneye on N64 - literally days have been lost playing this with friends.

2. Pirates! Gold on Genesis - one person action that can cause me to lose my mind in trying to complete the quests and hit a new top score.

1. SimCity Unlimited PC - this is the ultimate time-suck for me. Something about the always expanding possibilities and inability to please everyone drove me crazy.

Command & Conquer 1 (PC/Mac)
StarCraft 1 (PC/Mac)
Final Fantasy Tactics (GBA)
Final Fantasy Tactics A2 (DS)
Plants vs. Zombies (DS)

and probably a lot more I forgot...

Advance Wars 2. Would play that at work on my sp. Come home and play it on the GBA Player.

Speed Devils Online was crack. Back in the Dreamcast's online dial-up days.

I have the 360 version (on CD no less), and yeah, it's way up there. Got it back in Christmas, 2010, and unleashing an army of plants has never been more fun.

Never play Quarth on the Game Boy. It's the most mindless, repetitive, mind numbing.......ADDICTIVE GAME EVER MADE. IT WILL HAVE YOU THERE FOR HOURS AND WILL MAKE THE HOURS MELT AWAY. PROCEED AT YOUR OWN RISK.

RE4 would def be number one for me.
