The Video Game Critic

Internet forums seem to be full of stupid "console wars" with people for some reason trashing game systems. I think that's stupid, so in this thread, say something good about ever game console you have played, or at least some of them if that takes too long. I'll start. Some points may be more obscure than others.

Atari 2600 - I love that they still make great homebrew games for this system, nearly 3 decades after its release

NES - I love Rob the Robot.

SNES - Super Mario All Stars is basically a perfect game.

Genesis - The Sega Channel was the greatest thing ever when it came out.

Sega CD - A lot of the FMV games are entertaining to play simply because of the horrible acting.

32x - Had a great version of Doom for its time.

PS1 - This system had the greatest JRPGS of all time (I can understand people who would choose the SNES though, its close)

N64 - The Aki wrestling games are awesome

Dreamcast - Probably the best system for arcade ports ever

PS2 - Nah nah nah nah nah na na, Katamari Damacy.

Gamecube - It had the world's most comfortable controller.

Xbox - While not the 1st game system to go online, it was the 1st to do it really well.

Wii - Excite Truck is probably the greatest arcade style racer ever.

Xbox 360 - I love achievements and am greatful for this system introducing them to the world.


Playstation 3- Early models had a bizarre pack in game called Pain where you through people using a giant sling shot. I found it fun.

Wii U - Mario Maker is a godlike game, and completely justifies the gamepad.

Xbox one - Microsoft listened to fan complaints and actually changed in major ways ( got rid of always online DRM, sold versions without Kinect, and added backward compatibility).

Playstation 4 - Currently has the greatest graphics of any game console ever released.


And now the handhelds.

Gameboy - While it didn't technically have the 1st version of tetris in the world, it basically introduced the world to it.

Game Gear - Had a great version of Streets of Rage

Game Boy Color - Super Mario Bros Deluxe is a fantastic version of a great game.

Game Boy Advance - Probably the best system ever for Metroidvania style games.

Ngage- Was a fully 3d handheld released before both the DS and the PSP. I guess that's something.

Nintendo DS - has my favorite version of Mario Kart.

Sony PSP - Easily hackable to install emulators. Having a portable console with emulators of pretty much every console up to the 16bit era is awesome.

Nintendo 3ds - The 3d effect worked much better than I would expect, especially in the newer system.

Playstation Vita- I find I actually like the back touchpad.

Nice thread idea. It's good to see a thread that's purely positive. The hard part for me is limiting myself to one!


Atari 2600 - Highly addictive arcade gameplay.

NES - Mario! Especially Mario 3.

SNES - The controller basically created the button layout for every modern controller (4 face buttons and shoulder buttons)

Genesis - The 6-button controller is the most comfortable controller ever made, and the perfect way to play Street Fighter 2.

Sega CD - Sonic cd has it's flaws but it's still a great game and I'm glad to have another 2d Sonic game out there.

32x - Building the ultimate Genesis, with a Sega CD and a 32x was the ultimate nerd goal for me--something I dreamed of as a kid--so I feel a strange sense of pride every time I look at that behemoth.

PS1 - The dual-shock introduced the two joystick controller which would become industry standard and critically important for playing shooters on a home console.

N64 - The joystick was not the first, but it was timed perfectly and revolutionized 3d gameplay.

Dreamcast - Had two of the best fighters ever made: PowerStone 2 and Soul Calibur.

PS2 - God of War still amazes me with its graphics and spectacle.

Gamecube - Gaming's best party games: Smash Melee, Mario Kart Double Dash, and Super Monkey Ball.

Xbox - The many, many hours I spent playing Halo 2 online.

Wii - The best 3d Zelda game ever made, Skyward Sword

Xbox 360 - Not the most durable controller ever made, but certainly the most comfortable modern controller. The button layout is superb and I don't find my hands cramping or my fingers slipping off the joysicks like with other controllers.

Playstation 3- The Uncharted Series and the Last of Us have the best stories of any games out there, rivaling some movies, and have great gameplay to match.

Wii U - Mario Maker. It makes me feel like a kid again, actually goofing around in a game and not just seeing what happens next.

Xbox one - Cheaper than the PS4 and has pretty much the exact same software library to this point.

Playstation 4 - I don't own so all I can say is I am looking forward to having one for Uncharted 4 and the Last Guardian, which I am sure will be among this generation's top games.


And now the handhelds.

Gameboy - Mario Land 2: 6 golden coins stands up there among console Mario games in quality.

Game Gear - Sonic Triple Trouble and Sonic Chaos aren't as good as their Genesis counterparts, but they certainly hit the spot when I played them on road trips as a kid.

Game Boy Color - Seeing Pokemon in color for the first time was amazing.

Game Boy Advance - I look back at this as pretty port heavy but I certainly wasn't complaining about having a portable Mario 3, Mario World, and a souped up version of Metroid when I was a kid.

Nintendo DS - I dreamed of having a portable version of Mario 64 when I was younger, and this system satisfied that dream at launch; everything else was icing to me.

Sony PSP - The games might not be the most portable-friendly experience, but it has a solid library of exclusive games which stand up to the PS2 games they emulate (God of War, Grand Theft Auto, Ratchet and Clank, etc)

Nintendo 3ds - I've sunk more time into Animal Crossing than just about any other portable game ever (maybe Pokemon when I was younger).

Playstation Vita- I don't own one yet (thinking I'll buy one this year), but I'm looking forward to another Uncharted when I get one.
