VGC there is a Genesis FPS

Postby matmico399 » March 29th, 2016, 8:16 pm

Dave,

I recently read a review in your Sega Cd section saying there were no FPS on the Genesis. I played the heck out of this back in the early, mid 90's on my Genesis years before I had a PC while longing to play Doom.

It's called Zero Tolerance and I played the crap out of that thing back in the day! I just recently got it back and while very primitive, it's still a lot of fun. Check it out!

I actually have this and will try to review it.
I vaguely remember trying it a long while back. Guess I wasn't too impressed.

As hard as it is to believe, it's far from alone. The basic Genesis hardware was actually a pretty decent 3D platform for its time.

In the first person shooter genre, there was also Battle Frenzy/Bloodshot. That one was a PAL exclusive I believe, although it's easily worked around now thanks to consoles from companies like Hyperkin and AtGames that play MegaDrive carts and output NTSC video. And there's a late Brazilian release titled Duke Nukem 3D that is very reminiscent of the classic id shooters and which recently got a sanctioned domestic release.

And like Zero Tolerance, they're both are pretty respectable from a technician standpoint although they're unlikely to hold one's attention these days after the novelty wears off. I could see really getting into them though if one had experienced them back around 1993 or so instead of 2016.

I've also seen YouTube footage of the unreleased Zero Tolerance sequel that apparently is floating around out there in rom form (Unsure of the state of completion of prototype). And I've also seen video of a decent looking Wolfenstein 3D homebrew.
