Gentlegamer,
I am open to any monetization suggestions you may have, although I get the impression your don't think 17 years and 4600+ reviews are worthy of any compensation in the first place.

Just use AdBlock and NoScript.

So, why are you here? That's a legitimate question. The last few posts I've seen from you have been complaints. I see this all the time, especially on comment sections of websites. I've never understood why anyone would hang around just to complain. You must be getting something out of this.

I've been here for ten years.

I'm being a critic of The Critic.

I give his ad monetization and proposed subscription idea an F-. [malware icon, ebegging icon]

So you've been here for 10 years. That gives you the right to be rude? And you're being a critic of the Critic? More like being a troll, offering nothing contructive. I give your post an F-. (Sour grapes icon, Troll icon, Unable to be civil icon).

Gentlegamer.

Like you, I have been an avid follower of the VGC for 10+ years. Your posts in the past have been for the most part insightful - I am not sure where the recent rash of vitriol is coming from. I understand not wanting to be bothered by pop-ups and malicious adware during your visit, but Dave does address this immediately when something suspicious is brought to his attention. Being a webmaster myself, it is very difficult to ascertain every possible scenario when dealing with content being accessed on multiple platforms. That said, I doubt very much that Dave would ever purposefully want to inflict a device with malware or its cousins.

Dave started this website back in 1999, providing independent reviews as more of a hobby for our shared passion - video games. He continually has developed VGC based upon the community's feedback to this very day. The use of advertising has been limited to help defray web/server costs. This does help, but does not fully cover the purely financial expense of running VGC from a technical perspective. This does not even take into account the hours upon hours that it takes to maintain the website (i.e. new features, coding, design, managing moderators, etc.) and most importantly (and most time consuming) the creation of new reviews and content. Let me tell you from my firsthand perspective as a webmaster. The wife/lady friend may applaud our efforts, but they secretly just tolerate our obsession since it takes time away from them and the family.

I am thinking about a proposal that I will share in a future thread. Just wanted to chime in for the moment since your posts seem out of character. Help us to understand if something lies beneath that has ignited your discontent.

Gentlegamer, if I may take a step back, like you and Marriott_guy, I've been coming here for a long time, which is why I too am confounded by your recent posts. You've always been insightful and often-times humorous over the years, but your recent posts have been so out in left-field and just very unlike you.

I could see your point of view IF the VGC posted about the ads, "You don't like it? Tough. It's my website, the ads are staying, and I'll do as I please!" But anytime there has been an issue with the ads, Dave has been quick to address it and comes across as genuinely concerned.
