I don't think it is a scam at all. I guess I'm just too spoiled with free internet content in all past years...

As others have opined, it is more about supporting VGC rather than anything else. I use an ad-blocker as well, so there was no need for me to 'super-charge' my account. I simply did it to support his efforts, help defray some server expenses and hopefully provide a small amount of my appreciation for Dave churning out great content year after year.

Running an independent website myself, I can say first hand that there is a TON of personal time that is required to not only maintain, but to grow offerings and content. Dave's reviews, though very concise, are not something that he whips together in 5 minutes. The same can be said for the various upgrades (forum, main GUI, etc.) that continually take place to keep VGC fresh and relevant. My guess is that you like and approve of his efforts, or you would not be here commenting on the site.

The 'ad-free' power-up for $10/year (one Burger King stop for me) is more of a recognition and thanks from the VGC to supporters (IMHO). This only required his time - the most valuable resource that I am supporting - to enact. My support is a small token of my thanks and appreciation to Dave for keeping VGC alive and well with great reviews and an informed, respectful community.

I just paid $10 for a yearly membership which includes this site ad-free for a year, 90% off all GameStop games, free back rubs from the wife, half off Starbucks cappuccinos, free subscription to Angie's List and Consumer Reports, and a virtual pat on the head from the VGC himself.

This is all true. And for the love of God don't fact-check.
