Atari Flashbacks on the PS4/Xbox One

Postby VideoGameCritic » May 30th, 2016, 6:48 pm

This looks promising. Even if you have the old Atari games, it looks like there are going to be some remakes as well. Best of all, all the games are packed onto discs. I was afraid it might be a download title.

This looks awesome, and I will get it if it is true....but something bugs me about it.

For a system as powerful as the PS4, why not produce the most comprehensive anthology of your work that you can? You could literally create a History of Atari series! Great, now I'm dreaming, but I could see it looking something like this:

VOLUME 1: At the arcade

Pack a disc with arcade-perfect ports of every game that they've ever made, complete with interviews with the likes of Nolan Bushnell, Al Alcorn, Steve Manning, and others. Include concept art, insight into games that never left the drawing board, etc.

VOLUME II: The Golden Years

Include every game manufactured by Atari, and maybe work out an arrangement to include the entirety of the old Activision Anthology. The extras could be the same as VOL I.

VOLUME III: the computer age

Include games from the Atari XE, and...what was the name of their other computer?

VOLUME IV: The Final Chapter

Include every game from the Atari 7800, Atari Lynx, and every game that they could release from the Atari Jaguar/CD.

Seriously, that would be an awesome collection!

While likely crippled by the absence of a wheel, Sprint (Arcade) and Race/Indy 500 (2600) are two other notable new additions to the usual slate of games.

Unlike the recent Atari Vault release on Steam which this is a console port of, this is being published by AtGames instead of Atari. And according to a representative that participates at AtariAge, these are just the first of a planned series from them encompassing Atari's history.

So even if a tad bit disappointing considering that we got Atari Anthology for the PS2/Xbox over a decade ago with almost all of these same games on a single disc for $20, the future hopefully is bright. Not only are these worth supporting just on principle alone since most of us miss retail classic compilations, but even more so if they have other more intriguing projects cooking.

And it's Code Mystics that's handling the programming chores, so it should represent these classics well judging by their past efforts.

Do you see the marketing? "Leaderboards * Multiplayer * Online" lo que pasa con eso?

First, we played for High Scores, not for spots on leaderboards - leaderboards were for old people playing golf. Second , most of the included games like Adventure, Asteroids, Missile Command, Night Driver, etc are all single player games. Multiplayer was a strong minority of games. What is online? There weren't even bulletin boards associated with the 2600, so scratch any authentic experience. Is it an online high score board, because you competed to be best at the arcade, not the nation and beyond. Is it online multiplayer? Do you really want to play Outlaw with some random gamer on the internet? Is this for people who are that bad at making friends they need the internet to play 3D Tic Tac Toe? Its like they are trying way too hard to sell a 1977 Plymouth Volare.

They are marketing on the Atari art, with not a screen shot to be seen. The Amazon webpage doesn't even have screenshots or a video of gameplay. The artwork is genuine Atari, but many people have looked back and called that artwork hilariously deceptive. https://www.yahoo.com/tech/hilariously-deceptive-atari-2600-box-c1235025517453366/photo-flag-capture-1449871662165.html. The back of the Atari 2600 boxes usually had a screen shot, and it was well understood the painted art was just setting the tone. The artwork is part of the charm of early systems, but its amusing they there is not a screenshot to be found! No 3rd party or licensed games either. What is the draw here - Video Chess in stunning 1080p and 60 frames per second?

I think I will wait for the Complete Virtual Reality Edition.
