Did anyone say no online play? That's all she wrote for most reviewers. Sad. I imagine, as usual, I would disagree a lot.

I am missing your point... The Wii has online play.
But none from third parties until next year. I'm not trying to diss the Wii here or anything by the way. Me and another guy I talk to in online Animal Crossing have discussed this sort of thing before. Reviewers take away a HUGE chunk of marks based on no online. Like they'll say "this game would be 8-9 material with online, but with only 20+ hours of gameplay and no online we have to give it a 6.5". I was just pointing out that I'm pretty sure you'll see a lot of remarks, and grades, like that until some of the games are online. Sad but true. I was exaggerating for effect with the zeroes, as I was asked what I thought reviewers, and not me, would give the games.

Do your homework Paul, the Wii does not have online play for some of its launch titles. Particularly the FPS Red Steel and COD3, maybe you can call Nintendo and get them back to this century. Thanks.

Wow, those look almost like Gamespot scores. Was that intentional?
It's generally become so hard to get a 10 at Gamespot now, that we've come to think of 9.6 as the new 10.
No it wasn't really intentional...I was actually trying to make my scores look like ign. If they were gamespot scores they would probably be a bit lower.
Some people have mentioned how lack of online will force reviewers to lower the scores of certain games and yes this is going to happen...but it will only happen on ports of games from other systems.
Shawn this is where your online debate really makes sense. You asked how come Splinter Cell Double Agent could score so low even though it did well on other systems? Well you take out the multiplayer aspect (which gamespot says is ALMOST better than the single player) and you are left with almost half a game. Reviewers will not be kind to something like that. Games like Far Cry will also suffer for the same reasons and you might want to include Madden on that list. Yet Wii orginals will probably not be judged as harshly and games like Rayman and Monkey Ball will do well simply because of the zany fun they promise.
I think games that are orginally designed for the Wii will be given a grace period of a few months by reviewers for lack of online play. I would say that by March of next year if Nintendo isn't getting games online the press will come down on them.
This is still only speculation, but it will fun to see what the rating will be come the end of November. I wanna see how close some of us actually come to getting them right.

I also think it's going to depend on the game. Not all games are suitable for online play. Gamespot usually only judges a game for online features if (a) it had such features on another system, or (b) such features were promised. That also allows them not to judge online-only games harshly when they have no single-player component. Good examples are "Call of Cthulhu" for the XBOX in terms of having no online play but still being rated highly, and MMORPG games which tend to ONLY be online.

Wow! I forgot about Madden. The lack of online play for this game is idiotic! The game might be cool b/c of the controller but some people will be totally turned off w/o oline play. Like I said before, it's not he be all, end all but it will hurt them. I mean c'mon, online play is not a new concept, I was doing it 12 years ago on my 486 computer (Doom) for pete's sake! Thanks for the articles too, they were pretty good reads.

Mediocre launch? Are you kidding me? That's probably more original games than the 360 has right at this moment.

I don't think anybody is saying it's a bad launch line-up. I personally think its a good one. Last year the 360 launched with Call of Duty 2; I haven't played any Wii games but COD2 is an amazing game. Also, I would have to say at least for me that Condemned: Criminal Origins trumps everything (I am not into Zelda) on the Wii launch. Like I said though, I think it is a good line-up and like the article said, a little something for everybody. Personally, I am not interested in the Wii as of yet but that could change once the games come out and I see what the word is on the street.

The only way that Madden will receive high rating is if the controls are truly top notch. Madden has been on the decline for years and this years version has been one of the worst in recent memory. Every single person I know that owns it is terribly dissapointed with it. EA could use some innovation with this series and the Wii version might be able to breathe some life back into the old gal.
From what I've read the Wii version has some ninfty controls with graphics that are better than the xbox, but worse than the 360. The Wii version is also supposed to have more features and modes than any other version. Plus I'm hoping that the rosters are the most up to date. This is another launch title that could be a huge success or a major failure.

I am. So far it's been a bunch of cube/ds ports and red steel whcih looks awful. The two games that look like they are actually worth money is trauma center which is a pretty ds game, and monkey ball which is monkey ball and will be great. I'm not going to argue one launch is better than the other since it doesn't matter. If rayman had been a real game not a bunch of mini games this could have been solid, but it isn't.
