Excite Truck just got a 6.8 on Gamespot. They say it felt like a tech demo, not a game.
Guess I'll love it then.  I've seen both Yoshi's Touch and Go and Pac Pix called tech demos, and they're my second and third favorite DS games thus far.  In fact, Touch and Go is my second favorite handheld game ever (right behind Elite Beat Agents).  I think I've figured out the formula reviewers use:
Arcade gameplay + new hardware + original gameplay mechanic = tech demo.
As I like arcade gameplay, there's nothing in that equation to scare me off.  Now Zelda, there's a Wii game I'm scared off from.

COD3 got a 7.8 on ign and like it was mentioned, Wii sports got a 7.5. But if you read the reviews I think they are being generous. In the COD3 they even said that most people would prefer the analog controls because overall it was better. Basically, the Wii controls were pretty good during the exterior environments but it was frustrating while indoors b/c it was difficult to control (turning being the problem).  If you read the Wii sports review basically it is only decent for a two player game. Most gamers, the review stated, would be bored with it within an hour. Surely not on the same level as other Nintendo lauch games! EGM has a good article on the PS3 vs. Wii debate, basically the PS3 kills it but this is EGM.

I really hope the Wii does well but unless Nintendo can nail the control it won't have a chance b/c I have to say, constantly being compared to the Gamecube (graphics wise) is NOT a good thing. Think about how bad these games are going to look two or three years from now.

I have played the excitetruck demo and the game is terrible. I think the 6.8 score gamespot gave it is extremely generous. Nintendo will surely nail it with the Zelda game but I don't think they are going to be able to fool people for too long.

Call of Duty 3 doesn't really surprise me at all.  I watched the video review on ign and basically they said the game felt like a rushed sloppy port (most launch titles can feel this way).  There was so little information on the game prior to its release that you knew something was up.  Rarely does a game get little media coverage and end up rating highly when it comes out.

Shawn the premise of Wii sports is that it is meant to be played with more than one person...its not really supposed to be a single player affair.  The name of the system itself implies that people should play together.  I don't think a 7.5 is a to high of a rating for a pack in game that is meant for family fun.  The review I read made it sound like all sorts of fun.

Here's a short blurb from the ign article

"Prior to this review, we asked some of the girls who work in our advertising department to stop by our demo room and play both Wii Sports bowling and tennis. They don't play games and had only a very limited understanding of Nintendo's new console. We armed them with Wii remotes and very briefly explained the basic controls. Within seconds, they were competently going back and forth on the tennis court and knocking down pins in bowling - and they were having a great time playing. In fact, just about everybody we've introduced to the sports compilation has walked away happy, whether they have been a gamer for years or completely new to the activity. It's clear to us that Nintendo is onto something and sure enough, Wii Sports might even truly capture some of those non-gamers.

(As a side note, always wear your wrist straps. One of our ad girls -- Katherine Bowe -- became so engrossed in tennis that the Wii remote slipped from her hand and crashed into a nearby wall at mach speeds; luckily, although the strap broke, the back case flew off and the batteries spilled out, it all worked again when we put it back together.)"

I read the review and still believe that Nintendo is not going to be able to grab all of these non-gamers and turn them into Wii owners. It is one thing to grab people you work with and have them try it out; it's another to get people who don't normally play video games to buy the system. Sure, they had fun, but do you think you will be playing Wii sports months or even weeks after you bought the system? I doubt it. The review also went on to say that even with two players, an hour is about all you can stand before you are board to death! An hour!

I am not bashing Nintendo or the Wii, I hope it does well b/c that is good for us, the gamer. I honestly don't believe that this system is going to do much better then the Gamecube. Besides, if you look at the upcoming releases for the next year (see the latest EGM) what you will find is more Nintendo franchises..more ports...more derivatives. In fact, after, Zelda, the next big Nintendo release is.....Mario Galaxy in mid 2007! More Mario!

The point is that these reviews don't do anything to quell my fears that the controls for the Wii are not going to work well enough to be effective and may actually be a step down for certain genres (racing, fps). Too early to tell for sure but none of the four or five reviews have blown me away.

On the flipside...I can't wait to play with/against 40 people online in Resistance! Nintendo really botched not having online play with its launch. Very stupid!

I think the Wii will be able to convert some non-gamers. Go into a college dorm, and you'll see a bunch of girls playing Mario Kart. Mario Kart is just a simple arcade racer, and I think these simple sports games will appeal to even more people. I also read that EGM article, and like you said Shawn, it's EGM. When it compared the Software lineup (launch and future) it mentioned DMC4 and MGS4 for PS3 and didn't even bring up Mario Galaxy and Smash Bros. for Wii. Seriously, that's the stupidest thing in the world.

I think MGS4 trumps everything coming out for the Wii. Besides, Sony has a much large fan base then Nintendo, they can shoot out the derivatives and sequels and be fine. Nintendo can't. They have a lot of ground to pick up. Maybe tons of people will buy a Wii to get the pathetic ExciteTruck and  inferior multi-platform games...maybe not. Only time will tell. Give it a year and we'll see. One thing is for sure, if a year from now people are still comparing the Wii to the GC....Nintendo will be in trouble.

This was pointed out at another forum:
This is not anger in any way from the score he gave it, rather, this is just valid information about one of the worst reviewers ever and what you should consider before listening to what he says about anything, good or bad.

Remember that fantastic Mario Kart 64, one of the best selling games on the N64?

Jeff Gerstmann - "The foul taste left behind by Mario Kart 64..."

Or that amazing classic Diddy Kong Racing, a superb racing game?

Jeff Gerstmann - "6.6, even though this is a much better game than Kart 64 ever was..."

Metal Gear Solid was bashed because "once you know exactly what to do and ran through it, you could beat it in 3 hours or less".

He doesn't only bash games for stupid reasons, he praises them for stupid reasons too. Remember the perfect 10 he gave Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3? I could go on and on. You don't even want to watch that movie of him playing the Wii...

As a rule I've followed for a few years, whenever I read a gamespot review, I scroll down to the bottom and see who wrote it. If it was Jeff Gerstmann, I automatically ignore it.

Wait for a credible reviewer.
If Excitetruck is a better game than Diddy Kong Racing, it's an awesome, awesome game.

Even though ExciteTruck scored low with Gamespot, the people at IGN showed it some love.  They gave it a rating of 8.0.  Like I said in one of my first post in this thread...the game could go either way.  I bet some people will love it and some will hate it.  I bet if the Critic gets a Wii he will have to pick this game up.  Arcade racing games make him sweat with joy...I can almost bet that The Critic is drooling on his keyboard in anticipation of his local BestBuy stocking up on Wii systems for his purchasing.

That reviewer sounds like an idiot, but what's wrong with giving Tony Hawk 3 a ten? I'd give Tony Hawk 3 a ten, and most reviewers gave it at least a 9. It's an awesome game.

The clerk at the local place where I just played exitetruck showed me how good it can be when you get used to the controls.  I probably won't actually buy the game, but it was encouraging.
