I dont think they could make anything that would garner any 3rd party support, and their 1st party stuff is lackluster to say the least. It wouldnt make much sense anyways, as the "big 3" already publish Sega's 1st party stuff. They really dont need a console of their own to do that. Also, i dont think putting out a "fringe" console would do them much good either, as Nintendo keeps trying and failing with that.

I guess if they could secretly develop something that would blow Sony and MS out of the water in terms of specs, make it super easy to develop for, and make $299 or below, it could possibly work for them. Maybe.

The public is pretty set in their ways in terms of the console market. Even if Sega did put out something like that, I still dont see it being successful as many have a lot of gaming stats saved to the various online networks that are more valuable to them than the consoles themselves.

Geez Scotland, somebody in the industry should hire you. You got all the angles covered. Nice work. I'll answer the question with a no. I don't see it happening. If anything Sega will continue to shrink in this business not grow. that is unless they can do something with some of those IP's they're just sitting on. I think everyone wants a new Streets of Rage. I've been wondering why don't they do something with it & then I remembered that Golden Axe game they made on the 360. It was ok, maybe even good, but ultimately it was forgettable. They can't afford to release games that are merely good. They've essentially killed Sonic with mediocre games. They need to be like Rockstar & release the game when everyone is eagerly waiting for it. GTA 5 was pretty ordinary, but it sure did sell well.

Sure the graphics look great, but playing these games is a miserable experience, thanks to buggy games, constant updates, mandatory installations, online requirements, etc.

I'm hoping that the new Nintendo systems (classic and switch) will start a "scaling down" movement. I suspect they will both be a runaway success, forcing the industry to reconsider their current "bigger is better" strategy. This could give Sega an opening. I think people would buy a console predicated on fun even if it was dwarfed by the PS4 specs.

Sega had a system that was predicated upon fun, and it was called the Dreamcast. That system did everything right, when it came to software and promotion, and it still tanked!

It's crazy to me that a system that had one of the best Resident Evils (an exclusive, at the time), Soul Caliber, Sonic Adventure (still a fun game), Crazy Taxi, Jet Grind Radio, all of the 2K games (better, in my humble opinion, than anything being developed by EA Sports), Shenmue, Samba De Amigo, Phantasy Star Online, Skies of Arcadia, and so many others bombed as badly as it did!

Sega, sad as it may be, went out on a hardware high-note! I do like the idea of taking the Atari route and release a number of high-quality Flashback-style consoles, but dedicated to more than their 16-bit output! I would love to see them partner up with third-party developers and release limited edition replicas of their other systems, loaded with games! Sega-CD, Saturn (based on the complicated nature of the hardware, it will most likely never happen), Dreamcast, etc.
