I miss playing the 80's version of Popeye created by Nintendo.
What is the BEST way to play this game, without buying the coin operated Video game.

What is the best way to Play the 80's version of Popeye
I didn't get to finish my question.
I am looking for:
Best Graphics
Best Sound
Best Joystick
I heard the Atari 5200 has the best Graphics & Sound, but a poor analog joystick.
Would it be best, to somehow replace the 5200 joystick with something else, like MasterPlay or ?
Does anyone know the best solution?
I welcome your expertise.
Thank you!

I remember an adaptor that let you use the 2600 joystick on the 5200, and I think they even made 3rd party adaptors that would eliminate the centering problem. As far as Popeye, I would guess the NES had the best version. The graphics on the 2600 and even the commodore64 versions sucked.

Those 5200-to-2600 controller adapters are easily acquired from www.atariage.com.

If you have a good gamepad for your PC, the MAME arcade emulator and the ROM are the way to go.

Kroozer, thanks for the tip! I almost purchased the 5200 on ebay tonight, based on this article http://www.armchairarcade.com/aamain/content.php?article.57 the NES is the best for Popeye, looks like I will be leaning towards buying the NES.Note: I am little disapointed that http://www.videogamecritic.net didn't rate the Popeye game for NES
Thanks again Kroozer.

Michael,
What game pad do you suggest I should buy (I'd like a good joy stick with it).
What do you mean about ROM? How do I know if my computer has the right one?
How much better do you think this is verses the NES Popeye?

Try Playagain.net for the MAME rom.
In terms of home versions, I still think the
Colecovision is most fun although the 5200
has better animation of Popeye walking up steps.
But for REAL entertainment you can't beat the Odyssey2!<;
