Where are the Star Wars Games?

Postby VideoGameCritic » December 18th, 2016, 2:05 pm

While watching The Force Awakens the other night it occurred to me how great some of those scenes would translate to a video game. Then it occurred to me that there ARE NO VIDEO GAMES for the new Star Wars movies! Why the hell not?

I don't think it would be particularly hard to create Super Star Wars-style games based on the new Star Wars films. I would even settle for a 3D adventure that follows the storyline.

I suspect it has something to do with EA owning the exclusive rights to Star Wars. That company is where licenses go to die.

The only thing that could technically count even though it is not full related with the new movies is the following:

Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens (But that is just a Lego title and not the main movies version!)

Disney Infinity 3.0 has stuff from Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but that is just a toys-to-life game for kids with stuff from other Disney owned properties like Marvel and main Disney.

And Star Wars Battlefront had DLC content related with both The Force Awakens and Rogue One, but that is just DLC content, and the Ultimate Edition DLC is code only, and not on disc, which proves that EA is a greedy bastards!

It sucks that Disney gave the Video Game rights to EA of all people, because all they care to make with the Star Wars brand is spin off stuff like Battlefront, and not things based directly of the recent films, proves that EA sucks monkeys nuts!

Agree/Disagree with what I said critic, comments.

And By the way, I hate EA with an enraged passion because of many things related with this company, and this adds to the growing list!

I thought the same thing for star trek. Three movies only one game came out. It was of course terrible. Though there is a free to play star trek game out which is okay, but is is more an adventure title. I want a no man's sky version of star trek that is good and they have finished (unlike no mans sky).

A couple generations ago there were Star Wars games up the butt but nowadays there really isn't too many games... It hadn't really occurred to me until I read this post but I can't count too many Star Wars games in the last two generations... There used to be so many....

I sort of agree and disagree at the same time. Two of my favorite games of all time (KOTOR I & II) are based in the Star Wars universe but have no actual connection to the films. Some of my LEAST favorite Star Wars games are actually the ones based on the films. I don't want to see a Rogue One: The Game but I DO want to see more games set in the Star Wars universe(s).

Video games directly based on movies aren't quite as common in this generation, likely due to the general public finally realizing that most of them tend to be crap. The vast majority of the recent ones that come to mind are either Lego games or crappy generic freemium mobile titles. I remember hearing about a first-person game based on The Avengers that eventually got cancelled right around the time games like these started their sharp decline.

This would explain the lack of recent Star Wars games based on the movies, but not the shortage of Star Wars games in general. I just hope EA releases their death grip on the rights some time soon.

For me, I think the reason there are not many games pertaining to Force Awakens is that we are only one movie in. There has not been a great deal of character development with people like Poe, Rae, Kyle Ren, Snoke, Phasma, etc. So there isn't a whole lot to base a game on or weave a story other than doing a basic copy-and-paste retelling of the first movie.

Bear in mind video games for SW 4-6 already had the benefit of years of knowledge on the characters. Games for the prequel trilogy weren't difficult as we all knew where things were headed for people like Obi Wan and Anakin.

I'm not sure if it is a lack of Star Wars movies but looking at my original Xbox I have a ton of Star Wars games for it:

Star Wars: Battlefront
Star Wars Battlefront II
Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy
Star Wars Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II
Star Wars: Republic Commando

the Gamecube had a ton of Star Wars games as well as the 5th generation consoles. I don't think it has anything to do with a lack of movies...
