Box covers with reviews?

Postby VideoGameCritic » May 28th, 2017, 9:12 am

Box/label art can be a big part of the video game experience. Some of the old Atari art is legendary (Yars Revenge, Phoenix) but even new game art (like Breath of the Wild) can be iconic.

It occurred to me that incorporating box art into my reviews might add to their value. For old games, it would give a lot more insight into their underlying concept, making it fun to compare how the vision translated to the screen.

Not sure how I would do something like this, but I do own a scanner and a lot of game boxes. I'm open to comments and suggestions.

I assume you mean in addition to the gameplay screenshots, right? As a reader, I would find a screenshot to be far more valuable, for both old and new games. But if the boxart is in addition to that, then I think it's a great addition, as long as it doesn't end up cluttering the reviews or slowing the site. Most are probably easily obtainable online, without you scanning them in (that sounds too labor intensive to me).

Yeah I was thinking it would be in addition to the screenshot. Maybe a link underneath the screenshot saying "view box art" and if you hit that it would toggle the screenshot with box art. The problem is, box art tends to be longwise, so would fit into the same area... hmmm

Sounds like a ton of work. Maybe just a brief comment on it in the review with a link to an image of it.

This may also help to just limit to games with interesting or noteworthy box art.

If that happens, I'd like to see if you'd cover both regular and steelcase (if such a case exists for the game.)

Bit of a can of worms as box art can vary between both releases and regions.
