Resistance and Gears of War get 9.5

Postby Superjay » November 25th, 2006, 7:24 am

That's horrible. I just got the new Game Informer and they both got game of the month. That's horrible did anybody notice how wretched the backround graphics are. Yuck the enemies look great but the backrounds look like Xbox backrounds. Isn't the first party games supposed to push the hardware more than 3rd parties. I'm disgusted this is such a big deal for me I may not renew my subscription and just refuse to buy any magazines. Game Informer was the only magazine I liked left. Anybody suggest any other magazines?

I just bought a copy of Game Informer two weeks ago (the Dark Sector issue) and thought it was pretty good, and a bit more mature than most gaming mags. Plus they are based in the state where I grew up--Minnesota. So, I have to like them.

Funny thing is, I was looking for an insert to mail in so I could subscribe (you know, there are usually 15 in every mag), but couldn't find one. I thought it was strange. Maybe I'll check online.

You need to be more clear. You don't mention any particular game in your post(not referring to the title) so I don't know what you are talking about and which game you disagree with them on.

Game spot is the most accurate in my opinion.  No it isn't a magazine, but they never get swept up in hype.  And yeah fall of man looked generic as all get out.  If anything it looked like a quake clone.

Eh, Gamespot hyped Perfect Dark Zero, giving it a 9, which was a bit generous.  The multi was worth a 9 but not the single player.  Should have been an 8.  IGN does the same thing.  Unless all the sites rave about a game or it's got an interesting premise about it I usually pass.

I can't speak for Resistance, as I do not have a PS3 yet, but I see nothing wrong with Gears of war getting a 9.5.   The game may very well be the best team based tactical shooter I have ever played.   The cover system in the game is just perfect.   This game probably has the best control system of any shooter I have ever played.  Also, the chainsaw and explosive dartgun are just flat out awesome.   Every aspect of this game,  Graphics, sounds, Levels, Multiplayer, Single Player Campaign, and the feel of the battles is just perfect.  In fact about the only fault I can find in this game, is that your teammates die a bit too much, but at least you can revive them.

Resistance and Gears of War get 9.5

Does it really matter if both games got the same score?  Would it have made you happy if Game Informer downgraded Resistance to a 9.25?

Every publication has quirks about it.  IGN seems to rate games about 3-5 tenths of a point to high.  While gamespot tends to rank games 3-5 tenths of a point to low.  Both games are top notch...it really doesn't matter what they score.  Bottom line is that if you own a 360 you need GOW.  If you have a PS3 Resistance needs to be in your library.  The reviews don't even need grades...everyone knows both games are must haves.

By the way Resistance was not developed by a 1st party developer.  Insomniac Games is a 3rd Party developer that just works very closely with Sony.  If they wanted to make games for other systems they could...

I also agree that Gamespot are the best reviewers around.

You guys also have to realize reviews are opinions. As such, they can't be wrong. I can think Pole Position II is a B+ game for the Atari 7800, but the Critic is just as right to consider it deserving of a D-.

The term you're looking for is simply a 2nd party studio.  They signed/choose to develop for a single console exclusively.  Silicon Knights was the same with Nintendo until last year and now a MS 2nd party studio.  Factor 5 had a similar relationship with Nintendo and now will be developing exclusively for the PS3.

The only reason I'm familar with both studios is because I'm a huge fan of the Rogue Squadron series (Factor 5) and their upcoming Lair game for the PS3.  The same goes for Silicon Knights (Eternal Darkness) and their upcoming 360 trilogy.

Time for beer, later folks.
