Where to buy GBA games?

Postby Chicken Warrior » December 8th, 2006, 2:02 pm

Does anyone else find Game Boy games go down in price drastically without original packaging, and never go down AT ALL with it? With so much pirated stuff on ebay, I don't buy them there anymore, but everywhere else seems way to expensive. With so many crappy GBA games readily available, (and cheap to begin with), you'd think they'd be a dime a dozen, but it isn't so. Compared to DS games, most of them are downright pricey.

Where do you guys buy Game Boy games?

I've noticed that with any games from a system that used flimsy packaging as it's standard.  Systems like the NES, SNES, N64, Gameboy, Gameboy Color, Gameboy Advance, et. al. have this same sort of trouble.

If you can get a GBA game in a box that is still mint, it is worth a few extra bucks IMHO. I only get GBA games at Wal*mart. Ones in the case, locked, are fine, but the other day I saw a stack of SONIC RUSH 3 's on the rack, all smushed in, on sale for $19.99. Great, but I would have no box to store it in (and they are easy to lose! Sans box I have lost TWO already!). They had a bargain bin with the same problem. Packed too tightly together, people tossing them around like cereal boxes, you should pay the extra few bucks and be glad ya GOT a box! (thank heavens Nintendo saw the light with the DS cases!)

I actually like the cardboard boxes, for some reason (I'm a romantic, I'll admit it) but I hate having to pay $10 for a cardboard box. To redefine my question, I'm mostly talking about used GBA games. There are lots of places to get them new (and often surprisingly cheap), but not very many places you can find older games in original packaging...

CW- I work ocassionaly for a "mom n pop" store (in addition to games, they sell movies, CDS, etc...) and test new games and systems that come in. (this is how I've PLAYED systems and games I don't own like Sonic Adventure/Dreamcast!) ... anyway, never, ever has a game originally sold in a cardboard box come IN in a cardboard box. Plastic boxes like Genesis and DS, sure, all the time but NES or Atari 7800? NEVER! Not once! And I've been there for like 8 years now; I also have never seen a cardboard box at the places I look at. Non collectors have this equation in their heads; cardboard=paper=DISPOSABLE! BEEP! THROWAWAY! ... sad but true. You may be chasing wild geese looking for CHEAP games with an original carboard box. I myself have generally paid a premium (except on a very few lucky lawn sale days and trade deals). My advice remains, accept GBA games loose or expect to pay a premium -unless, again, you get lucky! Good luck!

Unless there's a game I can't wait to own, I buy GBA Games from Gamestop normally.  Once in awhile they'll have a buy 2 get 1 free deal and since they're kinda cheap already it's a pretty good deal.  The 3 games normally last me til the next time they have the sale, unfortunately though they seem to have them at random times, so call ahead or ask the next time they think they may have the sale.

On packaging I keep the booklets and if I have room the box, but otherwise I found these little plastic cases that store 3 GBA games and they sell them 3 at a time, so it's perfect for travel and storage.

Also, (I hate to sound like a broken record here, last response!)
in the case of Portable games I find that unlike me (I'm a game COLLECTOR) most people prefer some other storage medium than boxes. It's not like VHS tapes or CD's where the medium is about as big as the packaging. Portable GBA / DS / PSP games are TINY, and most people I know keep their games in pocket carriers / organizers or home-made versions of these. Really, when was the last time you saw an original black n white GAMEBOY or GAME GEAR game box (Lynx is more common since those were bought more by collectors than the average consumer) ? Old cardboard game boxes are not easy to find, but old PORTABLE cardboard boxes are darn near impossible! (by the way I do both; I keep my games in an organizer but as a collector of COURSE I keep the box, instructions, and anything else that comes with the game in mint condition.)
