Dragon Quest IX(DS!!)

In an interesting turn, it seems that the next DQ title will NOT be coming to the ps2, ps3 or, as speculated, the Wii but the DS!! This reminds me of the changing of the guard in the late 90's when Square went to Sony, cementing the ps1's foothold in Japan! DQ is a HUUUUUGE deal in Japan, likely to expand the DS's already impressive sales, and god I hope we get it here!!!

I don't get this one at all, why not make it on a system that could at least match 8 in the looks and sound department?  I would much rather see it on the ps3 360 or even the wii.  DQ8 is the best Jrpg ever, making the next one a ds only game seems like a huge step backwards.

Hmm, I don't know about that.  There's no load times on a DS, +1, dual screens means you don't have to pause the action to view your inventory or maps +1, as for the looks DQ8 uses cell shading which isn't exactly all that graphically intensive compared to say Oblivion so graphics will be about on par on the DS.

All in all I think it's a good move and one that can only help the series.

Speaking of DSes did you read the article that says folks that can't find the PS3 or Wii aren't picking up the 360 at as fast a rate as MS thought?  They're either picking up a DS or a PSP.

Well, the game is being cell shaded which the DS can do just fine, so I'm not sure its a huge step back.

So these two look the same to you do they?

And this isn't 1996 the load times arguement has no bearing, 360 load times last nothing if done right.  I would gladly trade hitting start for the second screen.  Plus the rolling hills and sweeping music will be gone or at least gimped.  This is not good news in any way to me.

From what I have read, Square Enix is trying to get the game to as many people as possible.  Non of the next gen systems have a large install base and the DS has sold more than 30 million units (or something like that...not 100% sure).  It makes no sense to come out on the xbox 360 since Japan hates that system and the PS3 will probably only have a around five million units shipped by the time this thing comes out.

Square Enix is simply trying to get the most return out of the money they invest in the project.  I imagine its also much cheaper to develop the game for the DS when compared to next gen systems.

Its actually kind of scary how much money it costs to develop certain games.  Costs have reached crazy new heights and it will almost certainly spell doom for the creativity found in the industry.  The risk of creating a new IP could single handedly destroy a company (look at Majesco and Advent Rising).

Anyways this sort of sucks for DQ fans, but I understand why they did it.

On that day Saturn Vadar betrayed and killed Sega Saturn X.  He's more machine than man now.

Seriously though, there's lots to be happy about here.  Any game not going to Sony is one more for the good guys.  At least now you won't have to pay $600 for the console that plays the sequel to the game you love so much. It isn't like SE were going to put it on the 360, given how that would go over in Japan.

Oh I fully understand why they did it, I just think it sucks.  Dragon quest 8 was the best rpg last gen, not just because of the game play (which was really basic).  But the lush presentation, the rolling hills and sea side that made you feel like you were on an adventure.  The sweeping music, and some great and funny voice acting made the game in my opinion.  They are hitting the largest user base, but at the cost of what made DQ8 special in the first place.

1.  Modern next gen games don't have to have load times if they are coded with good streaming like Gears.

2.  Cell shading is quite a graphically complex operation.  Jet Set Radio Future for example could not have been done on the PS2 or GC.  Cell shading on a next gen machine would look vastly superior to that and with that comes a great deal of complexity.

That really cracked me up atari fever .  Honestly I would have been happy even if it had gone to the wii (yes I knwo of the wii dragon quest it's pretty much DQ gun survivor as far as I'm concerned).  I can't speak for anyone else but even the ps3 would have been fine.  I mean I do plan on buying one eventually.
