Xbox: Halflife 2

NOOO!  Don't buy this.  He has a 360, and that version will come with Half-Life 2, Episodes 1& 2, and Portal, and be running on better hardware and in HD.  Seeing as he reviewed the original on, blech, PS2 and didn't like it a lot, he owes it to himself to play a real version of 2.

I'm not sure he would like Guardian Heroes that much as it requires LOTS of text skipping.  I agree awesome game though.

I really think that the Critic should try out Armed and Dangerous for the orginal Xbox.  Its easily my favorite action shooter on the system.

Critic, its made by the same folks that developed Infected (PSP)...so if you liked the arcade action in that game you would love Armed and Dangerous.  It has nice visuals, excellent explosions and a gun that shoots out a shark and it EATS PEOPLE!!  Plus it has tons of star wars jokes/references.

Here is a video of the land shark gun...its just as awesome as it sounds!

Sega Genesis: Rocket Knight Adventures and Sparkster (which is the sequel to the former)

Is Sparkster any good? I had a pretty good time with the original, and it has been a while since I've purchased a Genesis game.

Sparkster is... not as good as the original.

They redrew the Possum character's sprites for the worse (he seems flatter and more stiffly animated), the level detail is slightly lesser, and there's fewer humorous quirks. The most noticeable detail is that while RKA was mildly cute, they made an overt attempt to make Sparkster "cool" (ala Sonic the Hedgehog.) On the bright side, the music is really good and the jetpack control is modified. Sparkster is probably worthwhile but it falls short of RKA here and there.

Nintendo DS: Pac'n Roll. Ignore the fact that it has a plot that would make shawn throw the DS out of the window in disgust, this is brilliant stuff. Best described as a 3D platformer with no jumping button, you control Pac-man around spacious and pretty areas collecting pelletsrequired to open doors and access new areas by spinning a giant Pac-man on the touch screen like a tracker ball. It's really like nothing you've never seen before, and has massive replay value. Not only can you track down all the pellets and hidden diamonds, each level has two new challenges for you to partake in - a timed race to the finish where you must also pass a number of checkpoints (and thus follow a somewhat predetermined route), and an objective-based challenge where you must pass an obstacle course while either doing or avoid doing certain things, like not picking up more than a certain number of pellets in a stage where these have been placed at the worst possible locations - and you're timed as well.

While the plot and overall presentation make the game seem like it's aimed at the younger crowd, some of the challenges are really brutal and make zero room for mistakes, while still feeling doable. It's really an underrated gem.

...wow, this kinda became a full-fledged review.

That does sound worse, but does it play the same? If it is still fun to play then I'll still buy it.

I have absolutely no idea why, but I had a blast with Pac 'n Roll. It's incredibly simple, and the levels are unimaginative, but I think that may be why it's so great. It's nice to have a game that doesn't require thinking, and the time attack and challenge modes did add a lot of old fashioned replay value. Plus, it had the original Pac Man, which doesn't seem like much, but it is great to have if you don't have it on any other portable games.

I second the Armed and Dangerous nomination.  I have this game for the PC and thought it was a riot - the dialogue by the characters is classic British humor.  If you like Monty Python, you'll like Armed and Dangerous.  The game itself was quite fun as well, although I didn't care for the never-ending-respawning-bad-guys.  Definitely worth a review!!

Oh yeah, A&D. It was said to be one of the most humorous shooters in the emphatically long lineage of PC games. As for the gameplay itself, I can't really give it high marks. It's merely fun but the main reason you'd obtain the game is to laugh at the incredibly funny cutscenes.

I thought the gameplay was rock solid...its an old school run n gun shooter.  It plays like a 3D update of something like metal slug.  The pace is fast, the game isn't too long (it can be beaten in 5-8 hours) and as others have mentioned...its funny as hell.  For about $15 bucks this game can be had new on sites like ebay.  It was one of the first few xbox games I ever bought and its still one of my favorites.
