My fiancee the hardcore gamer

Postby Atarifever1 » December 13th, 2006, 7:02 pm

New Super Mario Bros. for the DS has done something no other game has done to this point: it made my fiancee play a difficult game for completions sake.  She finished the game a couple days ago after sinking a lot of time into it (she hasn't played as many games as us, so NSMB was qute a challange for her).  However, once she finished it (and told me about it on the phone while I was at work) I figured that'd be that.  However, I came home and saw her still playing it.  When I asked what she was doing she said she was trying to get all the star coins in world 2, as she had gotten them all in world one.  She said she was hoping to "buy her way" into the 2 locked worlds.  I looked up how to do that, and told her she had to beat worlds 2 and 5's bosses in mini form, and figured she'd say "oh well" and quit.

She just opened up World 4 and is now playing through it.

I've never seen any game she was like this with.  I mean, sure she's still aiming at every item and creature in Animal Crossing, but that's hardly an old school, reflex based platformer.  The part that really gets me is, although I think that's a pretty solid game, I don't think this game is AAA material or anything, yet here she is addicted to it like it's crack.  You don't even want to see her top scores in the minigames.

One platformer we did play through together before was Sonic 2 (we took turns on levels).  Does anyone think if she loves NSMB then she'll like the DS Sonic?  I haven't played it yet.  I'm actually going to be pretty sad when she runs out of things to do in NSMB and stops calling me with progress reports during the day.

If you still have the Genesis I'd get Sonic 3 or Sonic and Knuckles instead (preferably both for double the game). The DS Sonic is pretty fun, but it isn't as great as the Genesis Sonics or any 2d Mario game.

Yeah, but the DS is her system now.  She won't put the thing down between Animal Crossing and NSMB.  I figure if I'm going to get her into another hardcore game, it has to be on that thing.  The advantage to your plan is that I already own S&K though.

She might like Wario Ware.

I say buy her the Mario Advance series then. Will she care that it isn't a DS game if it goes into the DS?

Why don't you stop thinking just DS? The DS has a GBA port too, and I'd bet she would absolutely LOVE any of the $20 players choice Super mario games, SMBA1,2 and 4 are my favorites but being female she would probably think yosihi's island SMBA3, is "cute"! (my ex did)... try getting her an old school mario game!

Castlevania is great, but I think it may be a bit too 'hardquore' for a new gamer.

My girlfriend is crazy addicted to the two Rayman platformers on GBA and the GBA Metal Slug.  May be worth a look?

I hadn't thought of Rayman.  She'd probably like 3, until she got to the stupid running from the rolling rock part (if it's the same as in the N-Gage version).
