Wow, I never thought I'd see a review for Conan: Halls of Volta on this site. I think it's one of the best of the classic platformers. The fact that Conan flips when he jumps elevates this game to classic status.
I've never played the XEGS version, though, just on the Apple ][. Have you ever played that one? I don't think it suffers from some of the slowdown issues you mentioned.
