Hey critic.

Since you've played both Sonic Mega Collection Plus and Sega genesis Collection, I was wondering which compilation has the more acurate version of sonic 2.

Since I panned Sonic Mega Collection for the PS2, I'd opt for the Genesis compilation for the best version of Sonic 2.

Yeah, but did the PS2 Mega Collection speed up the music after picking up the speed shoes? Cause the version (and also in Sonic 1) in Genesis Collection did not; it drove me insane! How could they have screwed that up? The Xbox Mega Collection (the one I have) did Sonic 2 quite a bit better.

MD: I own Sonic mega collection/PS2 ... all of the sound effects are there, including the speed up after getting the shoes.

The PROBLEM with PS2 Sonic (on the Genesis ports anyway) is that (especially with Sonic one!) there is a weird static-y hissing noise when Sonic jumps, an obvious glitch. I'm told the GC version does not have this.

Strangely, the sound on the Game Gear Sonics is fine!

The developers for Sega Genesis Collection had some trouble emulating the sounds, so some things are recoded to play outside of the emulator. You'll notice a few inaccurate things here and there, but overall its a nicely done package.

It is a good collection, but I'm kind of annoyed that they just can't get these games perfectly emulated, especially when they have versions elsewhere (in other collections, I mean), other companies can get them right (like Capcom), and the fact that these collections are running on much more advanced hardware than the original games.  And no speeding up of the music with the speed shoes in the Sonic games just is ludicrious.

I would opt for the new Sega Genesis Collection for the Playstation 2.  It's a terrific compilation that includes Sonic 1 and 2.  The emulation is the best I've seen, and it's cheap.  I'll be posting a full review soon.
