Mortal Kombat Unchained warning

Being the #1 Mortal Kombat fanatic on the face of the earth, I recently purchased Mortal Kombat Unchained for the PSP.  From the name, I figured it would be a brand new title designed exclusively for the system.

You'd think I'd know better by now!  The PSP doesn't have a great track record in this regard.

Unchained is nothing more but a scaled down version of Deception, complete with the same opening cinematic, chess game, and puzzle mode.  I guess it's a pretty decent translation, but if any game should be called DECEPTION, it's THIS one!!!

The only new thing on that game was the Endurance mode, which was very more like the endurance rounds in the Mortal Kombat 3 and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 games.

That is a legitimate gripe. I don't have a problem with porting games to the PSP but for crying out loud let people know! It's too bad b/c it is practices like this that maintain the perception that all the PSP has is watered down ports. Sorry you got screwed. On the flip side I heard the game was pretty decent, I guess your review will reveal all.

What were you expecting critic? The PSP is mainly a "portable port of" type system.

Jak and Daxter was sent to the PSP (well just Daxter) without being a port, and I believe the Ratchet and Clank game planned for PSP is new as well. That's despicable that a company would disguise a port to get people to buy a game twice. That happened to me with Kirby's Nightmare in Dreamland as well. I was pretty annoyed when I realized it was basically the NES game sent to GBA, but at least that was a ten year old game that not too many people would be expected to already own. Deception is brand new.

Oh but don't forget, it had 4 characters not features in the console versions! Street Fighter is especially guilty of this... 1 new character and a mode that nobody will use doesn't justify a new title. How they made over 12 Street Fighters and haven't gone beyond 4 is beyond me.

With barely any original or new titles out there for the system, is it any wonder the system is slowly dying? It's even selling badly in Japan, and worse than the 360, too (quite an accomplishment, I know).

I would hardly call a system that has sold 17 million units in a year and half "slowly dying". Plus there are plenty of new and original titles out there for the PSP. I know, the DS is swarming with them, with new games like Yoshi's Island, Mario Kart DS, New SMB, Mario 64, Zelda....man...super original ideas. Give me break.

"Original" doesn't necessarily mean "good". People like the DS because it has classic franchises that are consistently done right. That's part of the reason why so many people are giving up on Sega; the quality of their Sonic games is sporadic at best.

Besides, he mentioned four or five games (two released before 2006, and one not even released yet), when there are hundreds to talk about.  It's his subterfuge to avoid talking about the real issue.  He didn't mention original games like Contact or Elite Beat Agents, for instance.

Unlike sega_saturn_x, Shawn spends a considerable amount of time trying to hide his fanboyism with obligatory statements like "I like the DS", or "Hey, if you like the Wii, then that's all that matters", etc., only to trump those statements with posts that purposefully lack details that wouldn't allow him to paint the DS or the Wii as the mediocrities or even failures he really hoped they would be.
