[QUOTE=Atarifever] If you want to throw in a couple exploratory sequences, fine, but if the game isn't blazingly fast while still leaving you feeling in control, then what the hell are you selling?  It certainly isn't Sonic.

That's the most important part. What I liked about the Genesis Sonics is I could go really fast, or I could stop to look around. It was never forcing me to run, or having me just press right on the D-pad. All I want is a 2d Sonic that lets me find things if I want to, or fly through the level if I want to do that. It should never force me to do either. Same thing in 3d.

I actually find Sonic Rush handles the feeling of control  better than many Sonic games, as the second screen often does let me feel like I can see far enough ahead to actually predict what I need to do and do something.  However, Rush falls down a little in that just stopping when you feel like it to look around, often dumps you right into a bottomless pit.

I had played this game months ago and didn't like it from the start.  I got it again in November and upon playing it again, I don't know why it was I didn't like the package as a whole because at this point, I love it, and think it's the only example of a modern Sonic game that still keeps the feel of the original.

I think I cringed a little bit when there was yet another new character in Rush, trying to gather crystals to save her world (which isn't Sonic's world, btw).  But after playing her, she turned out to be alright.  You just have to swallow the storyline long enough to notice that.

The things I like about Sonic Rush are the things I like about Sonic, Sonic 2, Sonic 3, and to some extent, Sonic and Knuckles -- speed without constant pitfalls.  Also, I think the physics are actually improved a little in this one.  In the old games, trying to get Sonic to run up a hill without a really good head start was tough.  You couldn't even get him to jump up the hill without some force behind you.  This one is more realistic in that regard.  Running up steep inclines from the get-go is hard but not impossible.  I hate the bottomless pit situation, and that's unfortunate, but it doesn't ruin the game.  Another thing I hate is the music. I can't figure out what it is exactly -- it sounds like some kind of cheerful heavy metal, with clanking sounds and voice samples.  Still, you get used to that too.

The DS is lucky to have the only good recent Sonic game.

I'm going to express an unpopular opinion: I love the music in Sonic Rush.  It reminds me of the music in Sonic CD, which is the only part of my copy of Sonic CD that sees any use.
I'm tired of new characters as well.  However, playing through Blaze's levels actually is fun.  She plays a bit different and having the order mixed up gives some nice replay value.  I'm working through both stories at once and playing both sides of the story changes the story from non-sensicle to just plain old groan inducing.   She's the best new character since Knuckles.

One other thing I've noticed I'm liking about this one is that for the first time I'm starting to recognize that there actually are enemies outside of Robotnic.  I can't think of many Sonic enemies off hand from previous games, but the mech looking robots and the magic guys in this one actually look like something you could pick out of a line-up a couple minutes later.

For me, there's only been 3 great Sonic games......Sonic 1, Sonic 2, and Sonic CD. Each of those 3 games felt very fresh, focused, and each of those 3 games have a distinctive feel/personality that makes them different from each other.

I know people like Sonic 3 and Sonic&Knuckles, but for me, those were the bad turning-point games. At that point, all  2D Sonic games were stale imatations of 1,2&CD.

I'm really surpised Dave is giving up with the 360 version. I personally gave-up after purchasing Sonic 3 on Genesis!

I hate to sound fanatic, but have you played Rush?  If not, you should, if you have and weren't impressed, you should give it another shot.
