I actually find Sonic Rush handles the feeling of control better than many Sonic games, as the second screen often does let me feel like I can see far enough ahead to actually predict what I need to do and do something. However, Rush falls down a little in that just stopping when you feel like it to look around, often dumps you right into a bottomless pit.
I had played this game months ago and didn't like it from the start. I got it again in November and upon playing it again, I don't know why it was I didn't like the package as a whole because at this point, I love it, and think it's the only example of a modern Sonic game that still keeps the feel of the original.
I think I cringed a little bit when there was yet another new character in Rush, trying to gather crystals to save her world (which isn't Sonic's world, btw). But after playing her, she turned out to be alright. You just have to swallow the storyline long enough to notice that.
The things I like about Sonic Rush are the things I like about Sonic, Sonic 2, Sonic 3, and to some extent, Sonic and Knuckles -- speed without constant pitfalls. Also, I think the physics are actually improved a little in this one. In the old games, trying to get Sonic to run up a hill without a really good head start was tough. You couldn't even get him to jump up the hill without some force behind you. This one is more realistic in that regard. Running up steep inclines from the get-go is hard but not impossible. I hate the bottomless pit situation, and that's unfortunate, but it doesn't ruin the game. Another thing I hate is the music. I can't figure out what it is exactly -- it sounds like some kind of cheerful heavy metal, with clanking sounds and voice samples. Still, you get used to that too.
The DS is lucky to have the only good recent Sonic game.
