Scariest game soundtracks?

Postby DaHeckIzDat » October 4th, 2018, 4:20 pm

Post a link to some of the scariest video game soundtracks you can think of.

Fatal Frame, Encounter to Himuro Mansion: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ByVJkfP3vqQ
This isn't even really a song, just a bunch of ghostly moaning. But as the track that plays when you first go into Himuro Mansion, it does a great job of setting the tone and giving you the feeling that these halls are filled with violent, restless spirits.

Bloodborne, Hail the Nightmare: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tuHzagjqOLU
Just like Dark Souls, Bloodborne is a game where music is usually only used for boss fights, leaving you to explore in eerie silence. But then you get to Hypogean Gaol and this starts playing. A creepy gothic choir singing in a foreign language that you assume is just background music... until you come back later, find everyone dead, the music has stopped, and realize that a choir was actually chanting that somewhere offscreen. And whatever they were trying to do, it must have worked because... well, spoilers.

Donkey Kong Country 3, Treetop Trumble: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y3WsNvqORzY&list=PL3F37BC9E9A5DC61D&index=22
Okay, hear me out here. Yes, it's a game about two monkeys jumping on crocodiles' heads, but the level this song plays on is enough to give anyone anxiety. You're trying to climb a tree while a giant saw is slowly working its way upwards after you. If you take too long, or miss a jump, it's over. And the song perfectly matches that sense of urgency you feel while playing it, with a haunting mixture of "gotta hurry, go go go!" and "calm down, don't panic, take it slow."

The snow level music from the original Donkey Kong Country always sounded like horror movie music to me. Why did they make it so spooky?

Seems to me some of the Silent Hill games had that that unnerving screeching-metal, Nine Inch Nails style music. Very creepy.

Fun fact, Akira Yamaoka made a lot of the songs in the first game (maybe the others, I don't know) with a dentist drill and a metal trash can.
