Call of Duty Bops 4 50 gig day 1 shocker.

Postby GameOfThrones » October 9th, 2018, 12:01 pm

Eurogamer is reporting that everyone's fave shooter has a MASSIVE day 1 patch. 50 Gigs all yours. Imagine what the Critic is going to say when he wants to play it. The article goes on to say that you will need 112 Gb free on the hard drive of your choice to complete the install but the game is a mere 55 Gb.

Then you get to play the unparalleled new game mode that no one has tried out before. Battle Royale!! No one has thought of this mode apart from Players unknown battle grounds and Fortnight. Okay it is slightly original unless you played pacman. Plus zombies capture the flag etc...

That sounds like the massive disappointment that was the Master Chief Collection. I think it had something close to a 40 GB day one patch for multiplayer. And even then the multiplayer still didn't work.

It would take me over 18 hours to download that patch at my internet speed.

I'll stick to NES games.

Thankfully, now that my building has fiber this download will only take about 13 minutes for me. That doesn't stop me from being irritated for the sake of others though. There's nothing worse than bringing home a new game only to have to wait until the next day to play it.

It's my understanding that the 112gb is solely on PS4 because of the way it downloads files. It's just 55gb on PC and Xbox One.

Since the update is 50gb, would that mean that they only put 5gb of data on the disc?

Didn't they remove the single player campaign entirely? Whatever is on the disk might as well be the unlock code.

They probably did it to give themselves an extra 4-6 weeks to fix bugs and polish. That's how the MCC ended up in its state, ie it wasn't ready in time.

Yeah, which I can kind of understand given the way game development is these days, but they could at least have filled the disc up with some kind of basic assets to alleviate the download size. That way the download could have just been gameplay tweaks, with the larger files installing from disc. Anything would have been better than leaving it practically empty. Heck, a CGI story sequence could be larger than 5GB these days.

This is the hell the internet has wrought. The reason the huge patch is required is because the game wasn't even CLOSE to complete when they put it on disc. They knew people would download the "fixed" version so Activision didn't care. To them physical media is a just a ruse to get you to buy - a glorified bait and switch scheme.

Frankly I'll bet the game STILL won't be complete or polished after you download the patch. Once publishers start to get lax with their standards, there's really not incentive for quality. Let's not support this business model.
