Gears of War Save System?

Postby VideoGameCritic » January 1st, 2007, 11:04 pm

Gears of War is a lot of fun, and the cover system is ingenious, but the save system absolutely sucks.

I usually like to play a cooperative campaign at the same time as I play through the single player mode, but apparently, you can only save ONE campaign at a time in Gears of War.  What the hell is that all about?  I had already played through a good chunk of the single player mode, and when a friend and I started a cooperative split-screen campaign, it told me it was going to overwrite my current progress!

It amazes me how a developer can do such a good job with the "hard stuff" (like cutting edge graphics and innovative gameplay), but then fail miserably to implement a simple feature like a decent save system.

Yeah Critic, it's really weird that it doesn't have save files for saving campaign games. I'm just playing the campaign single player-- I'm not into the Marcus/Dom Co-op mode. Critic-- here's a little tip: Play one campaign at a time. Use other profiles on your 360 if you want to play a new co-op campaign. If you have other profiles.

Eh?  It only overwrites the checkpoint save in between chapters (which aren't very long).  The game has 5 acts each of which is broken into chapters.  You can restart a single or co-op game at the beginning of any chapter you have reached in either single or co-op.  If you reach a part of the game in either mode it unlocks the chapter for both.  You can change the difficulty level whenever you restart at a chapter.

I agree 100% with the critic. Why the hell can't you save at least one of each? I has the same problem and it annoyed me to no end. I mean, a save takes up no more then 8 to 10 MB and that is on the super high end! Happy New Year!

20 flipping gigabytes of disc space and you can only save one campaign. That's ingenious. XD

One campaign per gamertag obviously.  You have no need for more than one.  I honestly can't believe you are complaining about having to replay 10 mins in between two chapters of the best game of last year, a game DESIGNED to be played through tons of times.  Besides you can start your single player game and he can just jump in anyway.

Okay, I discovered that if you create a second profile and load that up, you can save another game along the one in progress.  So why couldn't the game just tell you that?  That's shoddy design.

Otherwise, I am really loving Gears of War.  The bloody combat is extremely satisfying, and the graphics are sensational.

If there's one game that needs to be played online through co-op - it's Gears.  I don't care if you have to run a 100 foot cable through your house, it's worth it.

Tomorrow night Shawn and I are going online to kick some ass, and I can't wait!

I don't even understand why that is necessary.  Why should you have to have separate profiles anyway just to keep more than one game save entry?  What if you only want one profile for your own organizational purposes?

It seems like the one platform I keep having trouble with game saves with overall is Microsoft's.  When it was the XBOX, some games wouldn't allow you to transfer the saves from the hard drive (they were marked delete-only).  So when the 360 came around, I couldn't transfer those huge time-investments I had put into games like KOTOR.  Additionally, there was no good way to transfer the saves that would copy to a memory card anyway.  You had to really jump through hoops.

I think Microsoft needs to quit fearing what people will do with their own save data if they give them full access to it.
