Sure, the Gennie might have dominated the NES back in the day, but you can't possibly mean the old master system, do you? That system was fairly mediocre.

It had Phantasy Star, though, which is easily one of the 10 best games of it's generation. Just too bad it didn't really have anything else, save some half-decent Sonic games that were also available on the Game Gear anyway.
It also had the original Shinobi, which was awesome.  It also had the original R-Type, and if you don't like that I can't help you.  Zillion is also ncredible.  I'm not even going into the Alex the Kidd games, or stuff like Teddy Boy.  I've never understood why a system that has so many great games is so often called a poor system.
My PS2 was thrown about 30 feet from my deck- which is a good 6 feet off the ground. Despite some stuttering when booting it up (and only then) it works absolutely perfectly.

Honestly, the whole "sony makes crap products" thing seems like it happens to a few people who decide to blow it out of proportion.
I've bought three so far.

My original PS2 broke after about 3 years. First it stopped reading blue backed games, then PSX games, then DVDs, and finally everything. My brother and I replaced it with a slim PS2, and decided to get a 1-year warranty. Lucky for us that we did, because it won't read DVDs anymore, and I know it's just a matter of time before it breaks altogether, too. Soon I'll be on #3 as well. But you're right Conn; I guess I'm just blowing it out of proportion.
