But haven't review rubrics been around since the mid-90's?

Different people have different tastes; you're not obligated to like everything critics praise. Might be that critics have played so many games they're looking for something different.

That makes a lot of sense. There used to be a ton of platformers, the FPSers, then 3D platformers, then open world stuff. I guess battle royale games are the thing now.
If a developer tries something new and executes it decently, they are bound to get good praise.

I’m almost 40 and I feel like I’m aging out of the hobby. If a new games comes out, i May watch a YouTube video of someone playing it for an hour, but I have no desire to play it myself.

Could be that I’ve gotten more into speedrunning, which tends to focus more on older games. I do enjoy watching/running, as well as randomizers of old games.

I think you have mentioned in the past that speedunning renewed your interest in old games, because I then looked into it and was fascinated by the online community of speed running, and it certainly opened up a new dimension of gaming for me...

Definitely. Take SMB3 for instance—classic game, but you can only play it so many times. But with speedrunning, constantly developing new strategies and trying to beat your personal bests. And they come up with new categories to keep it fresh. And you are right, the speedrunning community is VERY supportive and active.

Pick your favorite game from the past and YouTube “games done quick [and the game]” and you’ll find some runs with good commentary explaining things. That’s a good place the start.

Anyway, back to SMB3—This is a sweet “all forts” race.
