I saw Dream Theater live a few times, including once with a lesser known prog band that was known as Spock's Beard. The "Beard" was terrific, and I would heartily recommend them to anyone that loved early YES/King Crimson style music.

I've heard of Spock's Beard by the same guy who introduced me to Dream Theater, but have yet to check out any of their stuff. What albums do you recommend?

I would say that most people think "V" and "Snow" are the best efforts. "V" might be a better album to cut your teeth on, as "Snow" is a huge concept album (but a very good one).
I would be careful of any Beard album after "Snow," however. The main songwriter, Neal Morse, left the group after this album, and the knock on the post Morse recordings is that they are inconsistent.

I always thought Guitar Hero was really fun but I never had an interest in buying it until.....the 360 version was announced with my FAVORITE BAND on it....Pearl Jam!! One of my favorite songs, Life Wasted, off of their new album is one of the songs!:-) God, what a great album that NOBODY FREAKING BOUGHT!!! Personally, it boils my blood because if there is one thing I'm into more than games, or at least as much so, it's music! You know how many headache-inducing debates I've had with completely ignorant people, attempting to explain to them what a great band PJ became AFTER their hayday?! I look at it like this, how can a band so admired by so many in the industry be seen in the same light as cheap-ass imitators such as Collective Soul, Candlebox, Silverchair, etc.? People suck!

Not the I would really expect them to put dream theater or pain of salvation. But some misfits or porcupine tree (wasn't shallow a big hit?) would be nice.

Seeing Dream Theater on Guitar Hero 3 would make me buy it in a heartbeat. I guess they would probably take a song from Train of Thought, cause it's the most.. mainstream. I KNOW that's not the word, but newer fans seem to like the heavier side a bit more.. I must say I disagree, though "As I Am" and "Stream of Conciousness" are some of my favourite Dream Theater songs.
Train of thought was my first DT album, but not even close to my favorite. Man I would love if they cut up bits and pieces from change of seasons and put it on there, obviously putting the whole 23 minutes isn't going to happen. Honestly scenes from a memory was always my favorite album of theirs, I played that thing to death.
And if you like DT you have to pick ups some pain of salvation if you haven't already. The perfect element and entropy are their best. Avoid "Be" unless you want a lot of "hi concept" prog rock. And about the misfits some of their songs are just so perfect for this stuff, short and fast. Mars attacks and holloween pls.

Pearl Jam is a great band, I agree. I thought Worldwide Suicide was pretty good, just nowhere near the genius that was Ten

Those are fightin' words. I love Collective Soul and how anyone can compare them to Pearl Jam is completely beyond me as they have a way, way different sound.
and I've got Pearl Jam's latest CD too, good stuff.
Nice post Shawn!

Oh, Iron, as much as I love Worldwide Suicide, there are songs on the album that put it to shame! If you want a song or two that approaches the geniuses of early PJ, check out Inside Job, Parachutes, Marker in the Sand, etc.:-)

Act, I'm sorry for criticizing a band of yours.:-( I liked a few of their songs but they never made an album that appealed to me. I like Ed Rowland's voice, though(I think that's his name).

I second you on Collective Soul. Great band, underrated. Really, the only band from that era of rock music that I liked.
