I think it has been an error.  Well actually a series of errors.  I think the name is really strong though, and it'll probably be like the N64.  When you look at it, the N64 might not have been as dominante as Nintendo wanted, but it did turn a nice profit, and it still sold in numbers similar to the SNES, just not in a ratio with the competition like they were used to.  Sony may see their ratio advantage shrink, but they'll likely do pretty well and live to fight another day.  In fact, given how far they have to fall, it's possible for them to do poorly by their standards and still outsell the competition.

You're forgetting the fact that Sony needs profits from video games to make up for their other losses. In recent years they have been the most profitable part of Sony. Ipod crippled Sony's portable cd player profits, and mini discs were a failure. Nintendo only makes video games, so as long as they make a profit they can still stands. Sony desperately needs the PS3 and BluRay to be a success.

RR7 is the same as RR6 but with a small number of extra tracks and improved online modes.

Shockingly the graphics on RR7 are worse than the year old RR6:

I liked how the bottom of that page was nothing but people saying how much ridge racer sucks.  But really what is with namco and their lazy half assery of late?  And their wonderful "if out crappy games don't sell ten bazillion copies were taking the ball and going home" attitude they have had?

If anyone's looking for a PS3 check out Best Buy.  I stopped at two earlier this week looking for a Wii.  In both were huge stacks of PS3s.  I asked the guy wheeling more up to the storage locker/shelf about them and he said it would take forever to sell them all.  He gave the "check back on Sunday" for a Wii statement.

I am agreeing that the PS3 will be like the Nintendo 64. Every major third system is certain to fail. I do not think Sega was like that. They were always failing from the add-ons for the Genesis. Anyways, the N64 was a popular system in 1996 with Super Mario 64. The problem was Nintendo used cartridges which led people to go to Sony. But there was some high profile titles including Mario Kart, Goldeneye, and Legend of Zelda games. The system would last until 2002 or 03 unlike the Atari Jaguar from 1993 to 96. The Gamecube came in 2001 but sort of was succeeding late in the lifecycle. Nintendo sort of failed like the way Sega had with the CD, 32x, and Saturn. Sony may start to fail in it's sales. The PSP sort of has it's ups and downs. The games sort of are good and bad. Sony should have never had done DVDs on UMDs which means poorer sales. It is sort of like this:

Sega CD, 32x= failure: Sega Saturn to be bad. Virtual Boy=failure: N64 to be bad. Atari 5200, 7800, XEGS=failure: Jaguar to be bad. It seems like every company who makes a third major console seems to fail.

I'm pretty sure it's the fact the 64 had nothing worth playing in 6 month gaps that lead people to sony.

- sega cd was not a failure. it had a shelf life of 3+ years, well over 100 titles and two hardware variations. it wasnt a runaway success, but you cant lump it together with the 32X as it was dead within a year

- cartridges, in of themselves, had nothing to do with pushing people away from the N64 to the playstation. it is true that final fantasy vii pushed a lot of playstations, as that was a classic nintendo franchise to that point, and that game legitimized the psx in the minds of average and casual gamers. and it is true that square went with the psx so they could trick people into thinking CG FMV were produced by the playstation CPU. the dirty little secret of the playstations success was the ease of piracy. so the CD had an indirect influence

- the PS3 will fail simply for its price point. 400 was an iffy price point for the 360, and sony was insane to think it could charge an extra 50 percent on top of that and generate interest in the casual gamer that drives most of their first place numbers for the past ten years.

I think it was pure idiocy to include a blu-ray DVD. Maybe I'll be proven wrong, but that increased the price significantly, and I would have preferred paying less and not getting one. I know that many gamers agree, and yes some disagree.

Well as I've said before.  I'm getting the PS3 because of Bluray.  It's the cheapest Bluray player out there by at least $400, so those who want a Bluray player would be stupid to pass it up.

Having said that, it was a dumb idea for Sony to try to push Bluray on its customers by including it in the PS3.  It's an attempt to piggyback something they are desperate to sell to the public as a standard onto a product they thought was going to be a sure bet.  Unfortunately, that's the kind of arrogance that often kills a product.

So while Sony is doing this kind of dumb thing, I'll be sure to pass up their $1100 Bluray model, and go straight for the PS3, all the while realizing that that is the very thing that will cause many people to consider passing on it altogether.

I look at it like this: Sure, I can afford a house that is more expensive than the one I live in but I'd rather have my $500/mnth mortgage than break myself paying a $1,000 mortgage or above. Sure, $600 for the latest technology is one heck of a bargain but so is getting a $30,000 car with a $2,000 rebate....doesn't change the fact that there is a large number of people who simply cannot afford it! Like Ken Kutaragi said, though, "you'll just have to work more hours to get one." Heh, nice try Ken, but I'll take those extra hours and spend them towards a nice family vacation, put it into my retirement fund, the kids' college, and enjoy my console that is more than half of what you are charging. Good deal? Yes, and congratulations to all who bought and enjoyed it.:-)
