3DO games not reviewed yet by the VGC

Postby goldenband » August 10th, 2019, 2:38 pm

I was interested to see which 3DO games in the US library the Critic hasn't reviewed yet, and so I decided to make a list.

Now, I have a thread already going that covers a bunch of systems, but decided to give the 3DO its own thread because:

(1) it has a ton of games still left to review and
(2) when you get into the 3DO/PlayStation/Saturn era, things get messy since so many games are multiplatform. Some of those games could use multiple reviews, but some are very similar across platforms.

Therefore, I've split the list into four parts: games that haven't been reviewed on any other console, games that have, plus separate categories for edutainment games (a few of which are interesting, like C.P.U. Bach) and adult games (which get pretty raunchy, will probably never appear on the site, and mostly aren't actually games anyway).

So, here are the list(s). Errors may be present; let me know and I'll fix them. In the first list, non-sports console exclusives are marked with asterisks (though those games may also be out on PC/Mac/Amiga).

The interesting thing for me is seeing how many "quintessentially 3DO" games are still unreviewed. I think of Blade Force, Star Fighter, and Iron Angel of the Apocalypse as very prominent titles for the system, for example. Star Fighter has been ported to other systems but the 3DO version is supposed to be the best.

And speaking of best, Star Control II probably isn't the Critic's speed, but many people see it as the #1 game on the 3DO!

I also think Captain Quazar, Mazer, and Snow Job could make for interesting reviews -- all of them console exclusives as far as I know. And I'm always pulling for a review of Kingdom: The Far Reaches since that game is such a nostalgia trip with an interesting history, but you could always review that on CD-i, since the sequel is a console exclusive for CD-i.

Anyway, just food for thought here -- sparked by the recent Drug Wars review, and having fun refreshing my memory on the surprisingly large and quirky 3DO library. And that doesn't even begin to address the huge albeit mostly impenetrable Japanese library for the console...

These lists are awesome. Nice job. I love 3DO reviews. To me the system at the time was the console port of a suped up 486 computer.

Thank you for providing this list!! Looks like I'm gonna need to get to work.

I don't think I'm going to touch those "adult games" however. I'm not trying to run an adult site!

You did Custer's Revenge review or does not count?

Awesome! Glad to do it -- you're very welcome. :)

Oh, absolutely agreed! From what I understand based on the reviews at GameFAQs, most aren't even games in any meaningful sense -- only Mind Teazzer and Neurodancer have anything resembling gameplay, and it's quite minimal (jigsaw puzzles, that kind of thing). The others are basically video CDs.

I second any and all additional 3D0 reviews. The more, the merrier!

I'm all for reviews of Bladeforce, Hell, and Return Fire: Maps 'o Death. Cyberdillo isn't the best, but its quirky style (a Doom clone where you play as a sort of armadillo RoboCop) truly gives it a life of its own. I'm surprised Cyberia, Creature Shock, and Offworld Interceptor aren't already reviewed on other consoles, as they had ports to the Playstation / Saturn and were fairly well-hyped back during the time of their initial release.

I know the Critic wasn't too impressed with Return Fire when he reviewed it for another console, but it will always be one of my favorites of the early 32-bit releases, and to me, it just screams early-'90s American machismo. Bladeforce is a fun helicopter shoot-'em-up which got pretty good reviews back in the day, though I remember the controls being hard to come to grips with.

Lastly, Hell is no classic by any means, but its got a ton of FMV with the occasional real actor, including a scene-chewing Dennis effin' Hopper! If that's not enough to guarantee it a review at some point, I don't know what is!

^Agreed on all counts! From everything I know about people's experiences with Blade Force (I own the game but haven't really played it), it's supposedly frustrating as heck, but it's certainly a technical showpiece. Cyberdillo is...well, it's one of a kind. :) And Hell (the game!), yes, the Dennis Hopper cameo makes it a must.

I would expect that Cyberia and Creature Shock are about the same on other platforms (Creature Shock is even on the CD-i!). Off-World Interceptor is an interesting one -- I'm not sure if the PlayStation and Saturn ports are better, but I seem to remember hearing that they are. Certainly Total Eclipse Turbo on the PlayStation benefits from having save points, which the 3DO version lacked.

Another game I put some time into is VR Stalker. It's a "bad" early polygonal flight sim, to be sure, but I actually enjoyed it somehow. Supposedly the PAL version has some minor upgrades, and is playable on NTSC consoles.

EDIT: Went back and marked the 3DO exclusives in the first list with asterisks, except for sports games (too much to unpack there). Most of them also have PC/Mac/Amiga versions, but they're still console exclusives.

So out of curiosity, I went to ye olde YouTube to watch some gameplay of Hell, mostly to jostle my memory a bit and see how much of the game I remember from before. It started up with a FMV sequence featuring the cast roll. Hopper gets top billing (of course) followed by a few names I didn't recognize, then Grace Jones...

**FULL STOP**

GRACE EFFIN' JONES?? Welp, it's settled, this game needs a review, STAT!!

Already ordered a copy off Ebay!

Not going to ruin it by looking at YouTube.
