MAME Arcade System

Postby ActRaiser » September 12th, 2019, 1:22 pm

Does anyone have experience either buying, building, or playing a MAME arcade?

Once we finish our basement I think I'll get one. I could build one myself but that requires a lot more time than I have these days. The quicker alternative is to buy one.

It seems like there are lots of choices available. I've been looking at Extreme Home Arcades. They seem to offer a lot of controller options including light guns.

Is this crazy? Probably. My other thought is that, maybe, this would make our home a little bit more of an attraction for my daughter's friends to come over versus her going elsewhere when she's a little bit older. (I'm definitely grasping for excuses here).

Wow these machines look amazing. The fact they support light guns astounds me. How do they get them to work with a modern display?

From what I can tell they function similar to a mouse cursor. I believe they use the Ultimarc guns. They plug in via USB and use an IR receiver of some sort.

It looks like one can even get recoil for the guns. Although, that might be a bit of an overkill.

The arcade system's front end runs Hyperspin on top of a Windows based system. That lets it use a wide variety of peripherals.

Pretty nifty.
