My best bet for Wii Online?

Postby Steerforth » January 13th, 2007, 4:51 pm

Here's my situation. I have dialup for my PC internet connection. I live in a rural area, so my only option to upgrade would be satelite. But I don't think satelite qualifies as broadband anyway,  and I don't want it to begin with because I wouldn't use it enough to justify the cost and have little interest in online gaming.

I would, however, like to connect my Wii to the internet, if only to surf the web on my T.V. and download some V.C. games or extra content, etc.  Obviously I would not even attempt to game online. So, is it possible to get the Wii online with mere dialup? I ask you VGC forum, because Nintendo's phone lines are swamped, and I believe they would try to discourage it even if it were possible. Thanks.

I'm not a Wii owner, but I'm thinking your only chance is to use the USB Wifi adapter connected to your PC. I know people have made this work with their DS, so the Wii shouldn't be any different.

Or you could spend the 40 and buy a real router, seing as how the nintendo wi fi one is like 30 bucks you're better off with a real one.  They are easy as pie to hook up as well.  Or you could just take the line out of your modem and put it into your wii ether net slot, then just switch it back when you want to use the computer.  The ladder doesn't always work what with IP screw ups and such.  But give it a try being that routers cost money and that method doesn't.

He's on 56k, which means a phone line running into his PC's built in 56k modem. I'm not even sure what you're proposing is possible on 56k.

I haven't had that service in like 8 years, so it's kind of hard to remember.  So routers don't work with them?  Jeeze time to upgrade even if you do need to get satelite and dish.

Satelite sucks for online gaming, it has good speed but it tends to lose packets and has a amount of delay in response. Plus, he's already said its too expensive in his original post.

All the guy wants to do is download Wii updates and Virtual Console games.

I'm pretty sure they don't.  I had a client with a Yamaha music storage component that records your CD's onto a hard drive and then goes online to find any disk information that it doesn't already have, and I did all the research I could and everyone I talked to said a router can't be used with the dial-up they had.

The first wireless router I ever bought was from Dell in late 2001.  It actually did allow dialup, but it also had a hardcoded key and I am not sure it even followed any standards.  It only worked with the PC card slot pluggable wireless card from the same brand name (which also came with my Dell).

I'd poke around Nintendo.com's forums. I remember some guy on there had detailed instructions on getting a DS online with dialup, so I'm thinking those directions might also work for the Wii as well.

Damn that just sucks, I guess you could get the dongle but 30$ for THAT thing is just such a rip off.
