Wii Virtual Console games . . . emulation problems?

Do the VC games have a "try before you buy" feature similar to all the Xbox live arcade games?

The difference is XBLA aren't just the old rom images.  They are newly coded titles.  The reason I think these things are important is that they are standard features in emulators which is what the VC is.

No they don't, and I think that's unfortunate.  I had never played Toejam and Earl, and now I really regret getting it.  If they had given me a chance to download and try, I wouldn't have purchased it.  I'd have purchased something else instead.

Tsk tsk. You are on a review site you know. Reading the Critic's review of the original Toejam and Earl (plus looking at the screenshot) is enough to let me know I shouldn't buy it. The second, Panic on Funkontron, is a much better purchase, should it ever arrive on the Virtual Console.

I tell you what, anybody says something negative about Nintendo and you guys are like superman to the rescue! It is lame that you can't download a trial version. A review doesn't say it all. The VGC gave Neo Contra a raving review. I tracked it down and to my surprise the game sucked ass. That's not his fault, it is just that it isn't the type of game I enjoy. Had I been able to demo it I wouldn't have bought it. Now on the flip side everybody gave Full Auto mediocre reviews but the VGC's review was the opposite. I went and picked it up and agree with the VGC, the game kicks ass.

I didn't post that in defense of Nintendo. Demos would be a good feature for the Virtual Console. I was just saying that I usually check reviews here before buying old games. He's not always right, but it's better than buying a game based on it being popular.

Just out of curiousity what about Toejam and Earl don't you like?  If you are playing that game single player you are missing out on the experience.  It really needs to be played with two people to get the most out of it.

It really is a classic and if you are judging it based on the single player alone then give it a second chance with another person.

TJ&E also starts off pretty slow...its one of those games that reels you in after a while...

I am actually playing it single-player because that's how I play most of my games.  I've only rarely been into multiplayer experiences (though I do participate in some of them).  It's one of the reasons why online gaming is, for the most part, uninteresting to me.

That might explain why you didn't like TJ&E.  I did the same thing you did when I downloaded it  I couldn't get over how boring the game was...then I remembered that the game needed to be played with two people.  Its been a much better experience since then.  Its one of those games that really satisfying to sit down and beat with a buddy.

I am like you and I mostly play games solo, but the Wii is about playing together and some of the VC games emulate that mentatlity as well.  Games like Bomberman and TJ&E perfectly fit into the "let's play together" mentality.

I hope you decide to play the game with another person, because it really is a fun quirky experience.

I just ordered the ethernet adapter so I should be online in just a couple weeks. I plan on downloading Bonk's Adventure, Bomberman 93, Military Madness, and Gunstar Heroes. Could all of you with the Virtual Console up and running tell me if there are any other games I should get? Leave out NES games; I've got enough of those already.
