Playing backups on PS2?

Hello forum world,
I kept seeing footage of an english Phantasy Star 2 remake on PS2, and after doing some research it turns out that it is a fan translation much like Shining Force III. (Which I now own, huzzah)
I do some research and there are a lot of different ways to play backups on a PS2, Memory Cards with Free McBoot on them, swapping dvds, and even modding your system.
Anyone out there have experience with any of these? What is the easiest route to go? It would realistically be only for the Phantasy Star 2 sega ages english translation.
