I love Mario Kart 64 and Double Dash, but whose idea was it back at Nintendo to make a Blue Shell that is typically launched by one of the last place people to knock out the first place person, only to knock him out and help the people in second and third blow by him. What is the point of that? Punishing you for being good? It never helps the person that launched it. Why don't they just have the person in first place get randomly knocked down to fourth a couple times a game? Is there any way to avoid the Blue Shell at all so I have less reason to be frustrated?

Live with it, and wait for an item switch to be added.

Thanks for the tip.
My point is, is there any reason for them to put it in there? Why would they put it in there?

Here's better advice. If you hear a blue shell coming, and second place is close behind, slam the brakes so second is hit just as badly as you are (if you can get more cars do that). You can't avoid it, but if you do that you won't lose as many places.

.Anyway on topic, i don't really see a reason why they'd put it in apart from levelling multiplayer matches so a completely useless player has a fighting (read ever-so-so-slightly annoying) chance.

Being someone that's absolutely terrible at Mario Kart in multiplayer, I always relished the opportunity to unleash the blue turtle shell of hell on my friends. There's something incredibly satisfying about knocking someone out of 1st place even if you're so far back that you have no chance at all.
So, sucks to be 1st, awesome to be in last.
Maybe, that's why Mario Kart was always so fun in multiplayer? Everyone always has a good time.
