The Gamecube was the worst selling console last generation, and considered by many to be the worst in quality as well. Why would Nintendo support it over the Wii? The Wii has potential to be very competitive this generation, but there was no chance the Gamecube would suddenly rise over its competitors 2 years before the next generation of consoles came out. If Nintendo continued to support consoles because a few fans didn't want their next console they wouldn't still be in business, but on the plus side there would be plenty of Virtual Boy games.

If they had done that with the N64 perhaps the Cube wouldn't have been in third plce to begin with. 21 million people isn't "a few fans". There are widespread Wii shortages after only a few million systems, it will be a long time before every cube owner ha a Wii. As a result, there will have been the better part of two years where many Nintendo fans won't have had support for their console. How will that help Wii sales? I don't understand that logic at all.
I mean look at Nintendo's handhelds instead of your Virtual Boy example. Gameboys are supported for ages after the new system is out, and you don't think their success might have something to do with the fact that fans aren't busy jumping ship from years of neglect like Nintendo's recent console owners have had to endure? If the GBA had been unsupported for a year and a half before the DS came out, trust me, there'd be a lot more PSP owners and a lot less DS ones.
Don't anyone give me the "they're supported because they are so successful" stuff. The Dreamcast followed the dumped Saturn and the Gamecube followed the dumped N64. Meanwhile, the PS2 followed the supported PS1, the SNES followed the very supported NES, and the entire Gameboy line has followed support for previous models. The trend can easily be explained as happening in the other direction (i.e. support leads to happy customers, continued name recognition, and better sales).

There is a big difference between your examples and the situation with the Gamecube and Wii. The Saturn was a failure so the Dreamcast failed as well. The N64 was moderately successful, so the Gamecube was moderately successful as well. Nintendo could have kept the same fans this generation by doing what the other companies do, as well as continuing to support the Gamecube. Instead Nintendo did something very different, in the hopes of attracting new fans.
I think you and ssx are in the minority as far as fans angry about the lack of Gamecube support. I didn't mean that 21 million people was a few fans; I meant only a few were annoyed. I think most fans of Gamecube probably still want a Wii, and people who weren't huge fans of Gamecube, such as me, also want one. I think Nintendo is attracting many new fans to the Wii, while only losing a few Gamecube fans.

You're on crack if you think me and fever are in the minority on this one. The only people who don't care are average joe gamer who got 2 or 3 games a year anyway. The game cube was a laughing stock for this reason, it had nothing. Stop defending nintendo for screwing over the people who supported them on their biggest console failure to date.

I'll be willing to bet that there are far more average joe gamers than otherwise.

You're right, it was their biggest console failure. SO WHY ARE YOU SURPRISED THEY ABANDONED IT? Anyway, whatever few fans they had were clearly used to getting 3 games a year, so I doubt they were too surprised when some games were moved to Wii. I also think you're underestimating the amount of casual gamers. There are far more average gamers than hardcore.

You abandon a console early and you abandon all the people who invested significant money in purchasing that hardware. The average gamer owns one system a generation and expects it to last that generation. You burn them and they will jump boat and go with a brand that won't let them down. Not to mention the vast majority of what was released for the GC last year was rubbish anyway.

The Xbox sold 24 million units, not 37-40 million.

I never said that there were 37-40 million orginal xbox units. I said there were 37-40 million
xbox brand consoles (that is both the xbox and the 360). I was under the impression that the orginal xbox sold around 27 million units and the the 360 sold 10 million and counting.

It's all about the benjamins (ya'll know that)...and the ultimate truth is we'll complain and moan, then throw them hundreds of dollars when a game comes out that we realy, really like.
Mario Kart gets me every time! Dang it!
