Just played the rom for about ten minutes then deleted it to conform with the rule that a rom you don't own should be deleted from your computer within 24 hours.
Dude, there's no such rule. Roms are illegal no matter how long you have them. The 24 hour rule was invented by pirates so uneducated people wouldn't report their rom sites if they pretended it was legal by throwing up that rule.
That said, Gunstar and Contra aren't similiar at all. Yes, they're both run-and-gun games, but that's pretty much it. Try playing Gunstar a bit more, and you'll see. Are you going to say Gradius and R-Type are pretty much identical as well?

I just downloaded Gunstar Heroes onto my Wii and played it for the first time the other day, and after a while I realized that it is very similar in many ways to The Alien Wars on the Super Nintendo, but I have not heard anyone mention this before. It uses alot of the same gameplay and explosions and weapon types and stuff. Definitely a great game, but definitely borrowing alot from Contra.
Besides that both games are intense run 'n gun full of flashy visual effects, I don't notice much similiarity.
"Speed Of Life" rules! But I think the moody "Warszawa" is my favorite instrumental on Low. It reminds me of sad RPG music.

a you will find the PC emulates games better than the Wii so I don't really know what you are on about "slowing down."
You can use USB controllers on the PC. I have a Playstation controller I use for some games on my PC, mostly racing but some shooters.
PC's can also output video to a TV.
So by playing his emulated version he wouldn't see any difference from the real thing.

I hate when people base their opinions of games off of emulations.

I hate when people base their opinions of games on very, very limited play. An hour, or a half hour is fine. But to say a game sucks because you can't run and shoot (even when that is clearly stated), that the bosses are easy (when you clearly haven't played any of the real bosses), and that knowing so little entitles you to giving a graded (to the +/- level no less) score, after ten minutes is pretty sad.

Right. Scroll down to the screen grab here from the emulator versus TV image. Freaking beautiful I'm sure.
Outputting to TV is not feasable in most people's living rooms from their computers. Many people have big TVs in the living room, and a computer in any other room.

10m cables are dirt cheap. The point is with the right emulator settings and a TV out card you won't see much difference on the TV. Not to mention that whole article is pointless since he is using a camera rather than taking screengrabs.

Just played the rom for about ten minutes then deleted it to conform with the rule that a rom you don't own should be deleted from your computer within 24 hours. Anyway , while it has some similarities, the level of control of the character is more limited, the worlds are less interesting, and weak bosses resulting in an overal lack of excitement. Having an enemey numerical energy bar is pretty weak too. Another weakness is that you can't run while shooting. Being ablle to throw eneimes off of you was nice though as it eliminates the cheap hits found in the contra games. Overall a pretty average game c-.

Wow. I mean, wow. You only used a few seconds of that 24 hours right? You realize every second enemy is a boss right? That's why they seem easy, because there are a million of them, so they can't all be Dr. Wily here. You also realize there's a difficulty setting, and if you think Seven Force or the Dice Palace are easy on a hard setting, you sir, are a cyborg. Also, you can run while shooting. It explains which of the characters can do that right there on the character selection screen. It gives you the choice, because some little Nancy boys need to be able to run while shooting. I prefer the good old dig in and shoot accurately plan myself.

Wasn't clear in my post. When I said weak I meant that the bosses seem boring and uninspired.

Lets clear some things up. First, you can get a general idea of how a game plays and acts with a rom. I never complained about controlling your character(except for running and shooting, has nothing to do with the keyboard). I know using a keyboard can't cut it. But you can usually tell if having a controller will bring the game to the next level or if it is a dud no matter what. Second, I'm not going to go buy an older game to try it out. If the rom of a game is fun and worthy, then I'll go buy it. Third, for older games like these that are repetitive arcade rambo type shooters, ten minutes is enough to see if a game is fun or not. Through one level of contra or metal slug I am hooked. Ditto for sonic or ninja gaiden.
I was being sarcastic about the 24 hour thing because most of you hate roms period and call me a thief even if I use it for a trial basis but will leave you with this: When you go to hmv you can try a music cd before buying. What's wrong with me downloading this cd and trying it at home, buy it if pleased or delete if not. I see no difference. To me its the same with roms.

Its well known that Gunstar Heroes borrowed heavily from the Contra series, surprised it came as such a shock.
"Man, when are you SNES fans going to stop this "Genesis stole our games" stuff."

"Just played the rom for about ten minutes then deleted it to conform with the rule that a rom you don't own should be deleted from your computer within 24 hours"
That "rule" is a myth like has been stated.
"I've never played the game, so I'm not defending it, but you can't judge it from a rom. You can't review a game you've played on your computer. If you played it on a collection or on Wii that's fine, but you need a tv, a controller, and a game that isn't constantly slowing down. I hate when people base their opinions of games off of emulations."
There are such things as PC gamepads that are just as good as any game console can provide. And the rest of that is just nonsense, try a halfway decent emulator on a PC made in the past 5 years instead of some slow PC and you'll get great results for most 16 bit and earlier consoles.
"I was being sarcastic about the 24 hour thing because most of you hate roms period and call me a thief even if I use it for a trial basis "
When has that ever happened? I have hundreds of roms on my PC, most people won't see the harm unless you're pirating stuff that is actively being sold and earning a profit for its owners. There's always a few that would disagree, but not most.

"Gunstar Heroes" is just like "Gears Of War" to me. The seemingly popular conclusion is that both of these games are perfect "A+" material, but to me, are both "B+" material, when I say so, fanboys go crazy and act like my "B+" grade is an "F" somehow.
Paul............since you're digging "Gunstar Heroes" and you seem to be a big fan of "Contra~The Alien Wars", I think it's very logical that you check out "Contra~Hard Corps" for Genesis. I give you the "Zen is right" promise........you'll be happy to own this game
