"Thunderforce 3 seems harder then I remember.."
Amen to that! In my early twenties, during the NES-Genesis transition I could blow through MOST shooters within 3 days.
Now I'm forty, I'm lucky to complete one lousy stage. I never got past level 2 of Gradius Galaxies on GBA!
That eye-hand co-orintinntintion..er, stuff really goes on you!

Nice topic!
Ice Hocley really was great, huh? I thought I was an idiot because I liked it so much.
True Classics?
Pro Wrestling NES
Warlords 2600
Yar's Revenge 2600
Rampart Lynx
Street Fighter 2 SNES
Tetris Gameboy
That's what has came to me after about 5 minutes of thought. I think of these as Time Capsule games

Ice Hockey for the 2600. Better sports games than this doesn't exist (though Punch-Out! comes close. No multiplayer there, though).
And yes, definitly agreeing with Steerforth, NES Ice Hockey is ace. One of the first games I downloaded for the Virtual Console.

I also sat down the other day and tried to play through one of my all time favorite games Ninja Gaiden again. Level 6-2 must have been designed by a sadist.

I've never beaten that level...
Oh, I always enjoy Kings of the Beach (NES)

Layer section is an all time favorite, as is in the hunt. Everytime I load those to up I can't stop. Also nights and most likely donkey kong jungle beat.

Which level is that? I think it is the one that I always get stuck on, and I'm curious so could you describe it for me?

It's the level that even has an individual faq on www.gamefaqs.com because it's so frustrating. Just tons of flying ninjas, eagles, etc. put in the right places to knock your guy down with cheap hits.

Looking at the FAQ reveals that level 6-2 is indeed the level I spent about 30 minutes trying to beat once. I didn't realize it had gained such infamy.

Yars Revenge - I remember that game. Strange and fun. Loved the buzzing noise in that game.
Speaking of Atari, anyone remember a game called Solaris? I wouldn't say it was a classic but that game had killer graphics for the 2600. (I suppose I'm a hypocrite for hyping graphics on a 20 year old game and downplaying them in the modern era. But I still remember being wowed by them then.)
I haven't played this game in forever, but remember Combat? Thats one of the reasons I expect to enjoy Wii play beyond the mediocre reviews its getting. 'Tanks' obviously draws some inspiration from that great little gem. I bet I ain't the only one that can still hear the sound effects in my brain.
Now I'm nostalgic. There is too much emphasis on realism in today's games. I have NES music and Atari sound fx on the brain. Games are asked to deliver too much today, I think everyone focus less and less on true fun and just nitpicks little crap that wasn't done right. Oh well, I should pull off my rose colored glasses and call it a night....

I'm glad you mentioned 2600 SOLARIS, 'cause it shows how I have NEVER liked 3-D "into the screen" games- not just the hyper realistic stuff of today but old 3-D'ers as well.
While I own Solaris and find the graphics for the 2600 about the best they can be, it is CONFUSING as heck. The maps seem to change randomly, you never know where to go, and I just somehow prefer driving left-right or up-down instead of "into" the screen, perhaps my brain is wired for 2-D!
SOLARIS was originally titled THE LAST STARFIGHTER after the movie, but changed when the rigts were lost, BTW.
