expansion pak for N64

Postby jrallen811 » January 27th, 2007, 12:59 pm

Hello all-

Any advice on where to pick up a memory expansion pack for the N64 for a reasonable price? the ones on Ebay are like $15+, which is actually a heck of a lot for 4 MB!

I bought my Expansion pack from a local video game store... The real problem is obtaining the little lever thing that takes out an expansion pack!

I got mine for around 10-20 dollars, but although its only 4 megabytes of ram it opens up a few Great n64 titles for you to play such as majoras mask and of course my favorite, Perfect Dark

The problem is, when people put the thing in their console, they're not likely to remove it. Most people probably don't have a clue where they left their removal thingy and their jumper pak anyway, and the only reason for removing and selling the pak would be if you know you'll never play another game requiring it on your N64 ever again, though you still want the console around.
Your best bet would be to simply buy a used N64 that already has an expansion pak installed. With the popularity of Perfect Dark, Donkey Kong 64 and Majora's Mask, you'd think most used consoles would have one.

Does leaving the expansion pack in cause any problems?

Nope, besides screwing up Space Station Silicon Valley.

You don't really have to worry about that because if you do need to take it out (say, to play Space Station: Sillicon Valley), Nintendo has stated that it's safe to use the handle of a spoon to remove it.

O.K., so I've poked around Ebay some. It's hard to say because the auctions are all different, of course, but it looks like the expansion pak premium is at least the $15...they seem to range from $30 with no pak or games and a controller (plus shipping) up to $100 for a loaded system. And since I already own one, it seems a bit silly to go for another... what would you guys pay for one with a controller, expansion pak, and a few games?

If you are looking at getting a brand spanking new expansion pak just go straight to the source...Nintendo still sells these babies online!  They sell them for $30, but at least you know its brand new.  That is probably your safest bet.  Plus you are really going to want the expansion pak for the games that make use of it.

Where in the game does it screw up SS:SV? I know I've heard that before, but the game still worked for me after installing the expansion pak. Is it only in a specific part of the game?

What's this about Silicon Valley not working if you have an expansion pak? I played through the whole game with the expansion pak in. And I never needed a little lever thing to remove the expansion pak or jumper pak either. It just takes a little effort if you don't have it.
