I have a "real life" story that I think sums up how Sony dropped the ball this generation, and how Nintendo is the primary benefactor.

Late summer I was talking to Andy, and old buddy I've known since I was a toddler.  He was asking me for advice on the best way to make sure he could get a PS3 for his son for Christmas.  Apparently his son was a huge Playstation 2 fan, and all he could talk about was the new PS3 and how great it was going to be.

I didn't talk to Andy over the holidays, but I did get an email from him the other day.  Guess what he asked me?  "Do you know where can I get a Wii?"

This got me to thinking about how young kids can be a good barometer for video game consoles.  They don't care about core processors, hard drives, or blue ray.  They just want to sit down and have a good time.

I agree. Gaming is suppose to be about playing games. Some people are just Fanboys and get a system because of a company.

but i remember the days when i was in grade school, where i was the loser with the intellivision, while everyone else had a 2600. then one cool kid got an intellivision, then i suddenly wasnt such a loser.

in other words, i think kids are quicker to jump ship and follow a trend more than adults... even in the internet age

I don't know how old his kid is but if I had a ten year old I wouldn't buy them a PS2 or an Xbox let alone a PS3. I don't think Sony is marketing too strongly to this demographic. I mean, I don't want to play Cooking Mama or Tomogochi so I guess I'll pass on the Wii. Games are supposed to be fun and there is plenty of fun to be had on the 360 or the PS3; more mature systems.

That said, I think Nintendo is brilliant when it comes to marketing. The DS is very successful despite the fact that it puts out more crap games then any other system out there. Why? B/c 10 girls are buying it to play Hannah Montoya or Nintendogs. I know, I bought my Niece those games for Christmas! So maybe they are right, it is more about perception and price point. The Wii's line-up is extremely weak in 2007 when it comes to games usually found on the 360 or PS3 but I am sure it will sell extremely well b/c of the buzz and they are marketing to a much younger crowd.

On top of that they have those who love their franchises. It will be interesting to see how everything falls out by the end of the year.

The biggest moneymaker for the games industry is still the 20s something male.

Uh...oh, um....sorry about that.  I think Shawn's posts are turning me into a zombie.

Now that I'm back to my senses, I'll be getting a Wii.

Bullcrap. There are a lot of PS2 titles perfectly suitable for a ten year old - more so than any other system, given the sheer amount of games out for the thing. Same with the PSX in it's time.

Again, what is "mature"? Blood and swearing? How about playing a game because it's actually fun to play? Living in college dorms, where one might assume that gaming would revolve around super-mature blood and death titles, Wii Sports has been the most popular game since it's release, with Guitar Hero 2 staying in a solid second place until some idiot stole the guitar. Other popular titles have included Mario Tennis, Mario Kart and Super Smash Bros, none of them games that sceam "I'm mature!".
Seriously, the only people caring about "mature gaming" over "fun gaming" are 14-year-olds attempting to look cool in front of their peers.

The definition of "Mature" has been pretty vague. I think that the definition has to do with the context of the game. Films are no different. Films are easier to determine though. For example, I would consider a film like Videodrome to be this because even though the themes are "Adult" the violence and sexual content are within the film's dark, brooding context. A film like Humanoids from the Deep (1980) would not be though because the graphic rape scenes are not within the context of the film and feel tacked on. A GTA game would be somewhat like Humanoids with having exploitation attached to it. While GTA has no rape the violence seems a bit out of context and gratuitous. If you can clear up any issues I have explained in this rant tell me. End of rant

When I was in dorms it was Goldeneye (a mature game), Dragstar on the 2600, Sonic 2, and, the very imature and cartoony, Worms Armagedon.  Also, we played RBI Baseball to see who could get a perfect game.  Only the first one where you look like Fisher Price toys.  I don't think mature actually means the things people think it means.  Animal Crossing is mature if you want it to be.

LOL Yeah, Animal Crossing can be mature. I remember my wife kept freaking out when she discovered all of the pro-nazi and Bush 04 signs around her house. Not to mention the "I give H**d" signs.

I think the VGC points out often that some "Mature" games are really immature... they are just lude.

Brother, I live downtown, I have a big time job, wife, kid, business, music career, rent houses, read the news, am political charged, surrounded by close minded people, related to idiots, discipline co-workers, push around club owners and bookers....

When it's video game time I happily embrace a colorful world filled with pink Kirby people and talking toadstools. The "Mature" games are more often than not too close to reality for me.
