To Cheat or Not Cheat?

Postby Minzo » February 2nd, 2007, 12:43 am

When I play a game I like to get my moneys worth. By that I mean playing through the game with no cheats. If I ever get stuck I go to Gamefaqs isntead of Using Cheats. After I finsih a game I like to mess around. Especially with games like Grand Theft Auto

So what do you guys do?

To Cheat or Not Cheat?

I've been soliciting help for Super Princess Peach. Yesterday I was pleasantly surprised to get by THE FIRST boss in Megaman X-4, that disc had been collecting dust up till now. The point is, if a game is just sitting there playing paperweight/coaster you may as well cheat and at least get your money's worth.

Do TRY to get through on your own at first, but if not get through it any way you can!

Yeah, I think that's right, Alien. Try to be legit, then use codes or whatever if required. To point of games is to be fun, after all.

Of course, sometimes I like that "quasi-impossible challenge" of having to replay a certain segment a trillion times to make it. What I don't like is having to restart whole levels, unless the levels aren't too long, like old school shooters.

To Cheat or Not Cheat?

Personally I never cheat. If a game is stupid hard I might, but so far the only game where I have is Turok 2 because I spent two hours on a level and had completely walked past an objective at the beginning.  If achievements are at stake I never cheat because I feel it devalues the whole system.  I always find it quite annoying when people spend hours trading wins with each other to cheat their way to them.

I do however like wacky cheats like debug ones and ones that add new fun to a game.

To Cheat or Not Cheat?

There are too many games I could have cheated on by now which actually may have warranted it.  DMC3 on the hardest level,  Viewtiful Joe on the hardest level for the Gamecube, Siren for the PS2 -- heck, if that last one didn't bring me to cheatsville, I doubt anything will.

To Cheat or Not Cheat?

I would say the only time I would truly consider it is in this case (as a former president would say, feel my pain!):

I sold my Gamecube last November, after discovering that my Wii could play all the GCN games plus use the controllers and memory card. However, I stupidly put my memory card in the package I sent (I sold it on eBay). I obviously didn't mean to sell the memory card.

I had Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance saves in particular that had close to 40 hours in the game. I was getting to the last third or so of the story at this point.

I contacted the lady I sold the GCN to, and she was really nice and agreed to send back the card.

HOWEVER. When I got the letter (yes, she friggin' sent it in a paper thin business letter, ugh), the memory card was stolen. Someone had obviously cut open the side and taken the card out.

So..... I think I might use cheat codes to rapidly play through the game until I get back to the point that I left off at, so I can see the story's conclusion before the Wii Fire Emblem comes out this year.

Yeah, the Turok games were kinda extreme in that regard. Extremely long levels with dozens of objectives often hidden away, coupled with rather limited ammo and respawning enemies = not good. Especially the first game was guilty of this - I made it through the second game on my own, but had to consult a walkthrough to see where the objectives were hidden away in the first one to avoid having to wade through endless armies of monsters looking for a small hidden area holding that last key in a level that took hours to play through without searching for stuff.

To Cheat or Not Cheat?

This is something that I used to be very picky about.  I would never under any circumstances use a cheat code to beat a game and only in rare instances would I consult a guide.  I used to beat games even if it took a long time...I relished in the challenge.

My how things have changed.  Basically I no longer have the drive to make it through some of the harder levels some games have to offer...since I have a pretty decent collection with numerous games still in the shrink wrap, I tend to move from game to game quickly.  If I get to a hard part in one game I will usually toss it on the shelf and try something new.  Yet if a game is compelling enough that I want to finish (a rarity these days) I will consult a guide for it.  I still won't cheat though.

I really wish games weren't so long these days.  More games need to fall into the 10-15 hour range, rather than the 30+.  It seems like there is more filler than ever and the constant need for story just doesn't make sense.  90% of games have awful stories...why make a gamer slag through it for 35 hours when it could have wrapped up in half that time?  I may not have found the story to be very compelling in Gears, but at least the game can be beaten in 10 hrs or less...and thats always a plus in my book.

I think the internet has really changed this.  Back in the day (before online), my only way of getting a hint was through game guides of games that happened to be at Walmart.  Of course, magazines had tips too, but it seems like they came out much longer after the game than today.

There is no "cheating" in one-player video games. You bought the game and you are entitled to enjoy it however you like. Using codes or "cheats" is no more cheating than buying a book and reading the ending first, or using "shuffle" to listen to a new CD.
