Halloween Suggestions?

Postby VideoGameCritic » September 6th, 2020, 8:47 pm

If you get a chance please peruse my Halloween Special and see if you can come up with recommendations for additional entries or maybe some updates!

https://videogamecritic.com/extras/themes/halloween.htm

I have a few possibilities in my queue including:
Resident Evil remakes for the PS4
Alone in the Dark 2 (3DO)
Scary School (Atari XE)
Maximo 2 (PS2)
Medievil (PS4)
The Bunker (PS4)

Should you luck into finding an affordable copy of Obscure for the PS2, I highly recommend it.

Seconding this recomendation from the 3DO thread. The frame rate's as terrifying as the many undignified ways the game can and will suddenly kill you, but there's a charm that's rare for polygon games of that generation. Especially on the 3DO.

Or for something more traditional, Majyūō, a Super Famicom action game that's an homage to 8-bit style action games, but uses 16-bits to take things in directions Nintendo of America never would have allowed on the platform.

Or, for something completely different, Spiritfarer.

There's a newer game called Carrion that looks like it would be perfect for a Halloween review. The premise is reverse horror - you're basically the creature from The Thing loose in an underground lab. There are two ads - one is fully-animated and looks like some lost late-80s horror anime, the other is gameplay footage. Animated trailer is NSFW for blood/gore:

There was a limited physical release for the Switch through Special Reserve Games but it's already sold out and going for big bucks on Ebay so a cheap digital download might be the way to go, unfortunately.

Looked into ordering Carrion on Ebay, but apparently you can only "buy" a preorder; the game won't actually arrive for months.
Not sure how that works but I'll pass.

The game looks amazing so hopefully they'll do a reissue at some point.

Critic,

I know you like physical media but check out download only Darkwood

https://store.steampowered.com/app/274520/Darkwood/

You can get it on the Switch and PS4 as well.

Top down survival horror with old school feel. I think this is a solid game.

If I'm not mistaken, Darkwood is supposed to get a physical release through Super Rare Games sometime this year.
