BETTER than the coin-op?

Postby Alienblue » February 4th, 2007, 1:03 pm

I was wondering if the Critic or others had certain HOME PORTS of favorite arcade games that they felt were SUPERIOR to the original several-thousand-dollar coin operated machine?

I thought Colecovsion LADYBUG, Atari 7800 CENTIPEDE, Genesis (and 7800 AND even 2600) Ms. Pac-Man, NES GAUNTLET and Atari 5200 JOUST were all superior to the coin-ops in gameplay.

Also, post-NES era, many games often used the same NAME as a coin-op but were vastly different (though not necessarily BETTER) than their inspiration... Strider, Rygar and Bionic Commando among them.

thats what i hated about the NES in its day was how they reinvented arcade titles (bosses in gyruss?, an ending in qbert?)

the only obvious example i can think of is soul caliber. the DC version was an upgrade from the arcade cabinet.

with ms pac man, i only find the game fun when the speed cheat is on. when it is, the arcade is my favorite, and with its various home version, i like the speedier ones. the 7800 would have to be my favorite. i know the genesis version is fast and has lots of extras, but i didnt find the controls to be very tight.

Shadow Land is a nice example. Sure, the arcade original is pretty and all, but it's just too damned hard to get anywhere without getting mauled to death by the extreme amount of monsters the game throws at you constantly (a bunch of them are invicible as well, yay). The NES "port", in addition to adding and removing several gameplay features, lowered the difficulty level a lot, and made the game much more fun to play.

SNES "Super Punch-Out" is superior to the arcade version in every way. But then it came out 10 years later.

The NES action platformer "Ninja Gaiden" is IMO stronger than the "Final Fight" style arcade game. The NES couldn't excel with graphics so they had to focus on tight gameplay and cinematic storyline.

Atari 2600 "Zaxxon" blows away the arcade version. Much more realistic 3D effect. Haha, just kidding.

The NES version of "Burgertime" totally destroys the arcade game. Faster gameplay and more graphically detailed hamburgers.

Also, I'll take the Genesis version of "Miss Pac-Man" over the arcade version any day of the week.

I liked the NES versions of Contra, Bionic Commando and Strider a lot. Though Strider became a com[letely different game.
