Another genre that is going to be very popular is the open ended sandbox games. Things like Black and White and Grand Theft Auto have only begun to scratch the surface in terms of open-ended gameplay. The power of the 360 and PS3 will bring these games to new heights.

I hope your wrong JLH. I'm not a big fan of RPGs, and I can't stand MMORPGs at all. I became burned out on sandbox games after Vice City. I'd rather FPS just stay as the standard.

Being SOOO not an FPS fan, I'd rather Survival Horror become the standard. Or action/adventure games like Zelda. Or even point-and-click adventures. I'd rather almost anything than FPS.

I'd rather action adventure or survival horror become the standard over FPS, too (not point-and-click though *yawn*). I'm just saying I have no desire to play MMORPGs or any more sandbox games, so I'd rather it stay as FPS.
I do plan on buying a 360 next year (when the inevitable price cut comes) and at that point I'll probably pick up Halo 3 and Gears of War. I'm not the biggest FPS fan in the world, but I do like a few, and the 360 definitely does them well, so I see no reason why that genre should be replaced by something else.
I hope I'm wrong too...I really don't like MMO games at all, but I just feel like they are that genre on the bubble to becoming really popular/lucrative. Sandbox games are great as long as we see some innovation, and games like Oblivion are merely stepping stones of what is to come.
I personally feel that the FPS genre is like the 2D fighting genre from the mid 90s. Right now everyone is trying to cash in on that genre when there are really only a few franchises that the majority of gamers care about. Eventually FPS will peak and gamers will tire of seeing them, causing companies to lose lots of money and change there direction.
I agree with you 110%! I would love to see Surival Horror become the new "IT" genre...but it probably will never happen. I wouldn't mind seeing some more games like God of War and Devil May Cry though. I really enjoy that style of action adventure.
I also really want to see some great next gen hack n slash games. I want that next Golden Axe game to really impress me. Even a next gen Gauntlet would be great.

The gameplay of "third person shooters" is usually the same as FPS's (walk around with one joysick/keys, aim with other joystick/mouse, and shoot at stuff), so they might as well be considered part of the same genre.

Well if your going to force them into the same genre you could atleast be so kind as to refer to them as shooters rather then first person shooters

A decent Ninja Turtles game would be nice, too. There hasn't been one since Turtles in Time. The next one's not even 2-player, so there's no hope for that. I'd be happy with Gauntlet, as well.

I'm very interested in the re-emergence of the adventure game genre on the DS, spearheaded by Phoenix Wright and continued with Hotel Dusk.
I've become hopelessly addicted to this genre. I'm actually replaying Phoenix Wright I right now (yeah, I'm kinda extreme).
My first thought is that the genre will get a quiet reemergence on the DS and handhelds, but probably won't penetrate the console market, unless it's on the Wii (which would work well for that type of game).

Did you sign the petition I put up here to have Revolution Software begin making point-and-click adventure games for the DS? This would mean the first two Broken Sword games at a minimum, but I believe they have expressed interest in making original games for the DS as well.
