Pick up and play? I don't think that could be considered a genre since it could be almost any type of game imaginable.

Think Xbox Live arcade.

Think Xbox Live arcade.
Most of the games on XBLA are aimed at the pick up and play market. Hell tons of them are made by Popcap Games!
I don't really consider that a genre, but as a distribution system.
Whatever you consider it, it's the next big thing. Simple to learn, difficult to master games like Geometry Wars, Ms. PacMan, Lumines, Galaga, etc will gain popularity as the average gamer becomes someone with a family and a million other responsibilities.
"..Ms. Pac Man, Galaga..."
..soooo, the "next big thing" is games released in the 1980's!!??? Okaaayyyyy...
I always said we never should have left 1982

That will be part of it, yes. Of course, as someone who wears a Galaga T-shirt and has pacman twice for the 7800 alone, I'm not going to be disappointed when that happens.
Personally I have been addicted to Lumines Live something awful. Once my embargo on game spending has ended I have a list of XBLA titles an arm long to get. I am particularly looking forward to Marble Blast Ultra, Mutant Storm Reloaded, Heavy Weapon, Assault Heroes and Roboblitz.

Save your dough on Assault Heroes. It's not worth the $10, at $5 it's a deal but at $10 you could have half the price of a full fledge game. The demo rocks but it doesn't really improve or change things up enough after that.
Actraiser I live in the UK where the price of a brand new game is $95. The cheapest you can get most 360 games second hand is $60. $10 sounds alright to me.
