PS3 Interview in EGM

I just got finished reading an interview with Sony America's President and CEO Jack Tretton in Electronic Gaming Monthly (March 07). His responses were typical: Sony never does anything wrong. If something negative is reported in the press, it was somebody else's fault.
No wonder Sony is in hot water. Check out some of these quotes (which may or may not be taken out of context):
On the negativity surrounding the launch:
"The problem we have... it's society in general. We're been the undisputed winner for over a decade now, and people keep waiting for us to slip up, and we haven't, so people try to create stories that aren't there"
On PS3's sitting on the shelf (early Jan):
"If you can find a PS3 anywhere in North America that's been on shelves for more than five minutes, I'll give you 1,200 bucks for it."
On the price:
"If you want the ultimate gaming experience and you see value in all those other experiences, all of a sudden 599 bucks doesn't sound like a whole lot of money"
On the lack of HD cable with the system:
"The statistics I've read say that 38 percent of the TVs that were sold this year were high-def TVs. To me that says 62 percent were not high-def"
On the lack of vibration in the PS3 controller:
"...it personally wasn't all that compelling to me. We feel that vibration is not part of our future"
On the Wii:
"I think Nintendo is trying to find their place in the market"
On attracting new consumers:
"I don't know if [the Wii] ultimately has the horses to do that"
On the ill-fated UMD movie:
"The mistake we made in UMD as a movie format was assuming the movie studios understood our consumers and their tastes... that they knew what they were doing"
On his vision:
"To ultimately be successful, you have to believe that every consumer matters"
For the record, the cover of the March 2007 EGM has a PS3 with tomatoes splattered on it.

You can just feel the spin oozing out of those answers.
The only response that makes sense to me is about UMD. I thought it was cool at the time (to be able to watch movies on the PSP so easily). However, many of the movies that were selected for inclusion on the platform were just plain odd (for the demographic of young folks using PSPs).

That's the stupidest quote in there. The rest of them are just attacks and scapegoating (not actually a word, I'm aware), but that one doesn't even make sense. If he's basically saying that less people own high-def tvs than regulark why did Sony make the PS3 a ridiculously expensive high-def game console/BluRay player?

I just find it hard to believe those are actual quotes, in that they are brimming with arrogance. Sure, Sony is arrogant, but execs just don't talk like that.

Boy did you hit the nail on the head. What is he really saying then about the value of the feature that makes it a $600 system?

You guys really need to stop picking on Shawn. Yeah, he can be annoying sometimes, but honestly he doesn't annoy me that much. Besides, I'm sure we're all a little guilty of bias. I know I'm pretty 'protective' of Tales of Castlevania, for example.
Not singling you out Paul, don't take this personally.

Honestly, when execs talk like this it doesn't really bother me...what do you expect them to say? "Um, yea we F***** up real bad at launch". No they are gonna put a positive spin on it and they are gonna make everything seem peachy and good. That is there job. Microsoft and Nintendo are both guilty of this as well. Sony isn't worrying yet, because they know that they have alot of games coming out this year. I remember reading somewhere that the PS3 has about 150 games coming out this year. You mean to tell me that its all gonna be junk? I highly doubt it.
Plus there are reports that multiplatform games will perform better on the PS3 (IGN is reporting that Oblivion looks better, runs smoother, loads faster and is more akin to a super high end computer than the 360 version).
Its easy to kick a company while there down, but I will wait a few years before I lay any final judgement on Sony's machine.
