I was tricked by the old Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow rumours back when I was seven or so. Well, I didn't actually have the patience to try them, but I did believe them.

Actually, the Japanese Famicom version of Super Mario Bros. has World -1, -2, and -3, which follow one after the other, and they are much more interesting than the pathetic one we were left with.  Take a look at them here:

Gees that video is frustrating to watch, because he gets into the minus worlds on the first try.  And what's worse... he went in backwards!!!  I heard that you had to jump, turn, and hook the bill of Mario's hat on the brick to make it work, therefore I have never seen those minus worlds until just now.  Are the US ones just swimming all the time?  And, is this actually some kind of fluke?  or was it purposely programmed in like that?

No, it wasn't put there on purpose. You see, the game has three warp zones, but the game doesn't load which one you've reached until the entire zone has scrolled onto the screen (which is why Mario walks across the roof for a while before dropping down). Originally, they're all the zone that leads to world 5, but since that zone only has one pipe, the two other pipes in the other zones don't lead anywhere until the zone has loaded. While the third pipe is unimportant, since you can't reach it without loading the zone, by glitching through the wall, you can go down the first pipe before this happens. And, since that pipe doesn't lead to a world, you don't end up in a world. Welcome to world " ".

So it's not the "Minus world", or World "-1", but world " -1"; Stage "1", world " ".

Well whoever told you that certainly made it a lot harder for you. I made it in the first time I heard about it. The minus world is indeed just a water level repeated over and over again.

I never actually heard anyone say that you could do it, but I used to try.  I don't think it's possible.

I've done that with the game Genie.  The level just goes on forever on the other side.

On Super Mario 2 (Japanese version) or Lost Levels, it IS possible to jump over the flagpole, but very difficult-you need a running start. The level won't scroll from there but you do get more points on the right side.
